1971 Caliper mounting - front or back?

Post by sdweatherman » Tue Feb 10, 2015 9:19 am

Starting to throw my front suspension back together and have a disc brake question for you. Does the caliper mount toward the front of the car, or toward the back? Long time mopar friend says toward the front. He says the flexible brake line is less kinked that way. I have seen pics on the nest where it is mounted toward the front. But service manual has a couple of pictures where it is mounted toward the rear. Maybe it is one of those deals where it can mount either way depending on preference? Thanks for the help! Scott.

On my 71 Charger the calipers were mounted on the front. The bleeder valve should always be on the top side... air rises and all that.

Front on a 73 Challenger. My kid's friend did it backwards on the Car Warriors TV show a few years ago.
73 Challenger, season 2, episode 10, 42 minute episode, Its at 19 minutes into the episode.

Scott:

Just went through this on my 71. Got the front discs conversion from Dr. Diff. He says the calipers are mounted on the front. At first, I was like, yea. Initially, I mounted the spindles so the calipers can be mounted on the rear. Just a couple of weekends ago, I swapped them to have the calipers to be mounted in the front. BTW, on a side note. I put anti-seize on every ball joint, etc to ease in taking them apart just in case. When I swapped the spindles back, that helped without tearing up the ball joints.

calipers mounted to the back for the front tires. I believe the theory is for weight distribution, my setup:

Thanks!!!!
its a shame that the kit is no longer available - cass (dr.diff) offers a similar baer kit. the problem with the 13" rotors is going to a bigger size of rims. I really loved the 17" rallye rims from year one but they didn't fit, I even shaved the mounting bracket 3/16" of an inch and it was still barely touching :(

Thanks guys! Even tho the factory service manual shows the rear mounting - looks like the overwhelming majority are mounting them forward. I am going to mount them toward the front also. Scott.
