71 steering column rebuild help

Restoring my column. Put all new parts on it and painted. Went to put it back together and the section that has the gear selector on it has a uneven gap between it and the section that has the gear selector on. Has anyone dealt with this? I have the manual, that I folowed, pictures. I tore it all apart again to see if I missed something but cant figure it out. It was getting late so I gave up. Any help will be appreciated.
