Hello,
I was asked today about re-installing the gas tank on my 72 RR and if there is a pad, mat or rubber piece that goes between the gas tank and the underside of trunk floor? To keep the tank from creating a spark or something? I have not seen anything for the top of the tank, but I have seen rubber pads that is used between the strap and the tank.
Thanks,
Jeff

I think DMT has the most correct pad.

I sent Jim at DMT the measurements from my gas tank pad, but I have not checked to see if they have it available yet. Other vender pads are more of a foam consistency, whereas the real thing is more of a thick roofing felt type material. I expressed my concerns to Jim about the material, and he said that he had researched the material carefully. So his reproduction pads should be very nice. Here is a pic of my original gas tank pad. It measures 22-5/8" x 25-5/8". The material is approx. 3/16" thick.

Thanks I will look into it. I cannot believe that was not replaced if it worn out.

The pad was designed to keep the tank from making noise from the contact between it and the trunk pan. They tended to lose there waterproofing over the years and dry rot. They also ended up holding water, rotting both the trunk pan and the top of the fuel tank. The early aftermarket ones were made of rubber or foam rubber to prevent this. The factory was a waterproof impregnated paper product.

Thanks, I just got more information about the original mat. DMT said the original pad was made out of asbestos material. I guess I do not want to go with that original pad. So I lose a few judging points that is better than my life
