'72 904 trans

It has a three-prong plug on it along with the mechanical speedo cable input. What is this for?

On the trans?- that is the plug for the neutral safety switch and backup lamps. The manuals only use a two pronger -just for the lights.
4th generation B bodys- there is no substitute.
