Part compatability for a 71 RR

Post by jonny0666 » Thu Sep 05, 2013 6:25 pm

I am restoring a 71 Roadrunner and i need some replacement sheet metal. It looks like my cowl might be shot, i was wondering if there is another compatible cowl for this body style? Also, a roof line?... pretty much everything around windshield... any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Jonny,
If you could post some pictures of the specific areas you need replacement metal, it may be a bit more helpful to us. The inner structures for 71-74 satellites/RR and chargers are nearly identical with just a few differences between A/C and non A/C cars.

**EDIT** Just noticed ralley72 is parting out a 73 satellite in the Parts for Sale section. You might be able to use some of that metal if he is willing to do some hacking.

WOW! You have some major rust problems. To my knowledge no one reproduces any sheet metal for around the windshield. You are going to need to find a donor car. How bad is the rest of the car? Did you remove the windshield to see how bad it is? Is the inner cowl rusted also?

Inner cowl, passenger side is bad. Other the. That... The car is fairly sound. Small pieces in the quarters... But the inside is pretty good.

Not too hard to fab small patches around the windshield, inner cowl is tougher.
A lot of these repairs will be covered when the car's finished, a very good thing!
I'd make as many as you can.

AMD makes a firewall for 70-74 E body which apparently can be used on a B body also.

I am facing a similar dilemma on a 71 Charger I bought. My solution was to buy a parts car, which will give me all the parts I need. You probably need a roof skin as well, so buying a parts car will likely be your best solution. Here is the cowl on my Charger.

Hey Jonny,
I have a windshield frame. I need a small section from the top center of the frame, and the section on the underside that the drivers sunvisor mounts to. If you think you could use the top corners, let me know. I need to scrape away the windshield rubber in the corners just to make sure it is a solid piece.

The e-body panel will work...only difference I know of is a cosmetic contour difference near the hood hinge area...I don't remember which side. I don't know why they are different but I noticed it at Carsile a couple of years ago when I was trying to find the differences.

If you want to replace that dash frame, I have a rust free one (blue) in my attic that I'll never use.
