G60-15 Tires

Post by 71bird » Sat Jun 22, 2013 7:51 am

I asked this over on Motarts and nobody knows the answer. With G60-15 tires the owners manual and the service manual both say that the suspension travel should be restricted.Does anybody know how to do that and why it was required. Was it to keep the tires from rubbing the fenders? I'm putting G60-15s on my car is the reason I ask.

I think it was to discourage you from putting that size on Sattelites with the std. suspension.
RR and GTX came with HD, or XHD suspension with front sway bar and some models with rear bar too.
Anyone buying aftermarket wheels back in the '70s could easily buy the "wrong" offset wheels that would result in tires being cut by the fenders. The softer the suspension the greater risk of this. There wasn't a great understanding of this in those days, and "everone" knew a deep dish mag looked the best. Many bought their wheels, tires, and air shocks, at the same time  Thankfully we're smarter than that today!

Those size tires were an option. The book says that to have those tires you have to have " 7JJ wheels and X.H.D. sups. with sway bar & restricted sups travel req'd." So they could be ordered on the car new from the factory.I'm putting them on my car and was wondering,do I need to do something else?

As long as you're using stock, or stock offset wheels you'll be fine.
Many run even larger sizes, with careful measuring!

We still jackup all our cars and put larger tires out back. Some people don`t like them, but I think most do.Our Cuda is the most extreme and it does very well where the public votes. It got best of show last year at a show of 63 cars and a top 10 at a show of over 300 cars so quite a few people still like them like the old days.It never did well when we would show in stock trim.

First, great Cuda!
I remember a black,340,72, with L50x15 tires, on slot mags.
They only stuck out to the edge of the rear fender, so wasn't raised much, looked tough!

Second, I wish I remembered this sooner. The "restricted suspension travel" comment may have referred to a large diameter flat washer I've seen placed under the rebound bumper. I've only seen this on a few cars.
The factory may have used this to restrict the suspension travel, though I would think this would just restrict the rebound (up) travel.

It was only required with G60-15 tires. Just curious what it was, and why. Thats what I'm putting on my car.
