To anyone who has done this job - is this better tackled from the top side or underneath? Or both?
Looks like if I remove the alternator it can be "reached" from above.

you got it, pull the Alt and everything is right there. Maybe clear the plug wires and the #2 plug, but that probably isn't needed
4th generation B bodys- there is no substitute.

Someone told me to wipe a hefty wad of grease onto the pushrod so it will stay in place while getting the pump and gasket in place. Sound about right?

Previous owner installed a Carter electric pump which is making 9 psi at the carbs inlet. A little high, but I don't think its causing problems. Fuel bowl levels are perfect when sitting still. That said, the pump is loud like a compressor and it has to go.
Oddly enough, included with the extra goodies when I bought the car were two mechanical pumps - a mopar pump which doesn't look "correct" and a Holley high volume pump.
I got a high performance Carter pump from Roseville Moparts, which they say is correct.
