Sounds like you have some rust or dirt on your fender tag. The so called X23 or V23 or Y23 in the position it's in should be N23 which is electornic ignition which was standard equipment on the 1972 Road Runners.

The G2X9 should be C2X9 for black deluxe bench interior. Sometimes it's easier to look at the back side of your fender tag to figure out what is stamped.

To everyone,
You are the best thanks for all your help with the decoding. Again, Thanks so much. It is really hard to make the C2X9 out. It does make sense because I do have the deluxe black bench seat. Also, the C21 was confusing, I thought it was a date just not sure what?:D

Does anyone know a Good website for decoding a fender tag? I used one a few years ago that had you fill in the numbers and /or letters.I can't find that website now

I realize this is an old thread but had some questions. The E38441 (order number) does starting with "E" mean it was built for Export? The other one was I thought I read to get A/C (H51) you had to up grade the transmission. No?

Yes, if your VON starts with E it was a "build for export" car. What do you mean by upgrade the transmission? You could get A/C with manual or auto with most engines.

I read somewhere you had to upgrade the standard 3 speed manual transmission to a 4 speed or a Automatic when ordering A/C. I think I seen it on an option chart. Of course I could of swore I read you had to have a full vinyl top when you ordered a sunroof but i seen one with a canopy type so I'm probably mistaken.

Not up on the transmission requirements, but if you ordered A/C you got the 26" radiator instead of the standard 22". The sunroof option required a vinyl top - either full or canopy was acceptable. Scott.

Edit - Just looked this up on the Hamtramck website. You could not get A/C with either the Slant 6 or the 440-6 pack engines. Or you could not get A/C with an air grabber hood. An Automatic Transmission was required for A/C if you had the 318 or the 440 4bbl engines. Sheesh!
