Axle seals

Apparently one of my outer axle seals are bad. Axles/rears are new to me.I have searched around but I am not exactly sure what I need for my 8 1/4 rear. Can someone help me out with this. :help:

If I have time this afternoon, I can get some pics posted for you. 8 1/4" rearends are pretty straight forward. If all you have to do is replace the seal, its a pretty simple job.

Like I said in the previous post, 8 1/4" axles are pretty straight forward. The only bummer is that you have to remove the rear cover and drain the gear oil. Throw some jack stands under the axle and pull the tire or tires off if you are doing both sides. I think I remember you said you had a sure grip, so your diffy will look a little different than what I have pictured. You don't have to remove the differential carrier! I just had an extra one laying around for easy picture taking.

First thing to do is to find the small bolt in the carrier that holds the large center pin in place. This pic shows the hole that the small bolt came out of.

This pic shows the large center pin that has to be tapped out to get access to the C-clip that holds the axle shaft in place.

Slide the large pin out of the way and push the axle shaft towards the center of the car. This will allow you to slide the C-clip off the inner end of the axle shaft.

Once the C-clip is off, the axle shaft will slide right out of the axle housing.

Once the axle shaft is out, the seal is right at the end of the axle housing. Just pry out the old seal and gently tap in the new seal. While you are in there, make sure you inspect your bearings and axle shaft surfaces for unusual wear. This pic shows what the outer bearing and the outer seal look like.

Thank you so much!Ill have to print this out for when i do everything.While i have everything apart ill check the bearings. I thought i had a sure grip but its just a limited slip.

Searches bring up alot of things and im not sure what type i need. Are these the seals I need?http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rat-6124/overview/

I figured anyway I would jack the back up,take it all apart and see what I need before ordering. Instead of making separate orders if I need anything else.

Yep, Axle seals for Chrysler 8.25. The picture is not exact, but it says that it is just a "representative" picture of the part. If you live in or are close to a decent sized town, there should be a shop that specializes in bearings. They would most likely have your seals also. You could check on bearing availability also. A word of advice.Try to find Bearings & seals made in USA.If you get China,Taiwan or Korean parts they won't last.Timken may still have American bearings. Just sayin'

The only way to get U.S. made Timken bearings is take the part number off of the bearing to a industrial supply house. The Timken bearings sold at NAPA and ect. are imported.

Like Scott said, don't ignore wear on the axle shaft where the bearing or seal "rides" or you will be doing this job again! :mad:

I don't know about summit, I would say they are imports. Now if you go to a industrial supply they can't go by Chrysler part numbers, they need the number off the bearing and the race.Thats what I did on some of mine.
