I want to rechrome my door mirrors but I cannot get the remote cables detached from the mirror. Can it be done without damaging the mechanism?

In general, chroming is an electro-plating process using chemical solutions in a vat, at elevated temperatures. However, if you are considering a local shop, take your mirrors to them and ask that same question.
Chroming can be costly. Some shops only work with steel or brass and won't do pot-metal/gray metal. Repop mirrors might be a better way to go.

Do not take your mirrors to a shop that does not specializes in pot metal, they will grind them to nothing.I bought a set of repos for my 71, granted they were the first generation offered and I hear that they are better now, but they are junk. I plan on rechroming my originals. Look on the moparts forum there have been threads about doing just what you want to do.

Just for the record, I bought a driver's side remote control chromed mirror for a 72 e-body in 2011 from Year One. No complaints at all, except the grand price. Perfect finish, operates smoothly, and fit perfect. Might be the same mirror as b-body, not sure.
A good chromer will be able to do a good job for you. Go to some local shows or cruises and ask around - people who have 50's and older cars. Chances are they had things rechromed.
