Introduction of my 72 SSP

Hello to the group. I wanted to finally introduce myself and my 72 SSP. I purchased this car 13 months ago. I'm the third owner. I completed the interior restoration late last summer and now I'm working on a complete under hood restoration. The car is going back to original with just a few "upgrades". I have all the parts to take the car back to original if I ever decide to go that way.

I do have a few questions later in this post.

When I purchased the car it came with the original build sheet, window sticker, dealer bill of sale and even a receipt for the car's first oil change. All body stampings and fender tag match.

I know that Chrysler Corp. didn't keep accurate records for us to determine, 40 years later, how many cars were produced with particular options, paint colors, etc. I have researched and found the 1972 Optional Equipment Installation Rate report that was published for the dealers at the beginning of the 73 model year. One of my questions is; Is there another report that shows any more detail then the Optional Equip. Report? This report is very vague because it only shows the % for each particular item across the whole product line.

I found it interesting that TX9 black was only produced on 1.9% of the Satellites produced in 1972. I thought it would have been a higher percentage. Also, the 400 engine was installed in 8.2% of the Satellites. I would assume the station wagons would have been a large percentage of the 400 engines but I'm not sure how many SSP's had the 400.

Second question; did Chrysler stamp match the engines and transmissions to the VIN # in 1972? My car currently has a 1976 440, but the car came with (what the previous owner claims to the original 400). I can't find any stampings on the block or transmission. The casting numbers seem to be correct but I wanted confirmation about the VIN seq. # on the block and transmission.

Now that is something you don't see everyday.

The block and transmission have machined flats on the oil pan rails that will have the stampings your looking for. I don't know what they should be, but the numbers gurus here will chime in on that.

Nice ride!

Sweet car!
What happend to the original white canopy vinyl top?
Very unusual to have a black car, white top and blue interior!
Black was the sixth most popular color for 1972 Road Runners.
I would think black would have been just as popular for SSP's
There is an option and accessory report at the end of every model year.
I do not know of anyone with the 1972 SSP breakdowns.

I have this showroom poster on my wall.

I believe the original owner must have had the white top changed. This is a photo of the day the second owner purchased the car from the original owner. Notice the white top has been changed.

Nice! That's a great color combination, glad to see it remain a SSP instead of being cloned to a road runner.

It almost looks like the vinyl top has been removed in that picture you posted. Is that the remnants of the vinyl top hanging over the top windshield trim??

I believe that is the remnants of the vinyl top hanging over the windshield trim. The guy I bought the car from shared this photo with me, this is the day he purchased the car from the daughter of the original owner. The car set for 10 years without being driven (so the story goes).

I plan to keep a black top on the car even though it originally had a white top. I know that a black car with a white top and a blue interior has to be rare. I can't imagine too many where produced with that color combo. Like every Mopar owner out there, I wish I knew how many cars like mine where really produced. Too bad Chrysler didn't keep all the records.

Here are some photos of the current "work in progress". Complete restoration of everything under the hood.

if there is no numbers on the block then you have a "warranty" block. When a motor died under warranty, dodge gave gave you a new block but they didn't have any stampings on it. They are worth alot more because technically you can claim your car as original with a warranty block as its impossible to disprove that your car was ever replaced with one back in the day...
