Look on both sides of the engine block. One side will have the casting number on it, a seven digit number - sometimes with some additional numbers. The other side will have a date on it. That should be a good start on figuring out what engine you have in there.

According to the vin in you'er post, it IS a 383 car.Do what every body has suggested and look on the pad above the oil pan, Looking next to the distributor also can tell you what it is also, and like the other guy said on the side of the block.Even if it doesn't have the original motor, its still a REAL RR.One thing though,if its a 400 don't change things like flywheel and so fourth cause those will be different than 383 stuff, more than likely.

i am happy to say i found out they replaced the motor with a 69 block-----the engine ID by the distributor reads ---E 383 ----which i found out it is a 69 383--i like that !! better engine block than a 71 ---soo-- looking forward to taking it apart and going thru it!!!
