'71 GTX rocker moldings - painted??

Post by NOrrTH » Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:00 pm

I finally found my rocker moldings and no one is sure if they originally came painted silver or are they just bare aluminum? I can't seem to find any good pictures. There is old silver paint on mine but who knows?

Thank you

Both painted and bare metal...see pics from Gary's survivor hemi GTX. Raised areas are bare and recessed areas painted.

Does anyone know the correct color for the paint on these mouldings? Were they all the same grey color? I thought they were black, but it could just be an incorrect restoration that I saw. I found a guy that has a pair for sale, but he said he bead blasted and primed them. I'm not sure how hard it would be to restore them (I haven't seen them yet). Are they thick enough to sand and polish?

I believe the paint is Chrysler's Argent Silver.

I scored a pair of these on ebay 4 years ago, but have not really done much with them. Have to get the bodywork and paint done.

The ribs are solid rather than hollow, and the valleys in between might be about .050" thick. The long edges are rolled around to make a small flange that would be flat against the rockers. There are spring wire clips that fit into the flanges. Seven per side ? Mine came with only one of these clips. I don't know what the mating clip on the rocker looks like.

These moldings must have been a decent grade of aircraft aluminum. Mine had only moderate surface oxidation, but no pitting. The peaks of the ribs, which are the area that was not painted, could be sanded safely and probably would polish to a high shine with the right technique.

If you don't mind saying, how much is he asking?

Four years ago I spotted a pair on ebay asking $900 OBO. I offered $500 and he jumped on it. They had paint overspray, and one needs to be straightened a bit. All in all, not too bad.

These are hard to come by, so I'd say if the price isn't too high and they're in decent shape, buy them.

He said $1200. He's Canadian, so I'm not sure if he meant US or Canadian dollars. I'd have to see some good pics before I'd consider it. I'm going to be off work on a furlough probably next week, so spending money is not a wise choice for me at the moment.
