build option

Post by kenny » Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:09 pm

I have recently purchased a 71 road runner it is a sept 70 build and i was wondering about a few things as i start taking it apart and rounding up stuff to put it back together any info or ideas would be a lot of help.
1st - did all hood call outs have reflective backing? mine are black and the car is dark green and mine do not show any signs of having white background. They just show the green body color through, the way the gold strobe stripe does in the "road runner". Did any cars come from factory like that?
2nd - fender tag is missing however the build sheet shows "d21" for trans, from what i can tell that should be for a 4-speed, however my car has a 3-speed with matching vin number section on pad. i have also tried to find out breakdown of 3 vs. 4 speed production with no luck is that because the issue i have shows up a lot?
3rd - my interior code is m2x9 tx9 on build sheet however my car has black benches with a dark gray insert, and they look bad enough to be original so i am wondering if mine should be all black or is the black with gray correct when i go to buy covers?

Thanks,
Kenny

Welcome to the Nest Kenny.
Hood callouts - this seems to be a common issue. From what I see, the original callouts were white reflective material with the black printed on top. I believe the black printing protected the vinyl, while the exposed white area deteriorated and that's why you see the paint color showing through.

D21 is the code for a 4spd trans. It's possible they made a mistake on the line.

M2X9 - this interior does have gray centers on the bench seats. If you look at this thread you'll see the original M2X9 interior in my B7 blue car

Hello, and welcome. My seats are the same way, but I have switched to buckets. My car also had a 3 speed but with a whole lot of options. The way things were back then a 4 speed was considered high performance and a 3 speed made it so you could get insurance. That is the only way I could at 19 years old in 1974 when I bought my car. If you decide to switch trans let me know like a idiot I threw some of my 3 speed stuff away, but I still have the trans though.
