440 in 1971

I am very confused on this issue dealing with the 440 4 barrel being offered in 1971. Some say it was and others say just the 440 Six Pack was only offered. It seems strange to not offer a 440 four barrel engine in addition to the Six Pack. Which is right?

Thanks,

Adam

Officially the 440-4Bbl was not an option for Road Runner or Super Bee through out their run.

The 383 was the standard motor for both models until 1972. After that the 400 was standard till 73 IIRC.

The optional motors are as follows:

426 Hemi 1968-1971
440+6 1969.5 - 1971
340 1971 - 1973

The 440-4Bbl came standard on Charger R/T, Coronet R/T, and GTX

The truth is the dealarships had a lot more flexibiltiy in those days and several 440 road runners and super bee's were built. Also dealerships would commonly swap 383's and 440's under warranty issues. So a 440-4Bbl road runner could be had, but it wasn't exactly an available option.

In 1972 you could option for a 440 in the road runner which would be part of the GTX package. So in 1972 you could have a road runner GTX.

Confused yet...

Interesting. I thought for sure they did. I do know the 1970 Superbird had the 440 4 barrel as an option I believe. Doesn't matter, I'm glad to have a 440 anyways. :D

Thanks for the reply.

Ooopps forgot about the wing cars. Yes the standard motor for both wing cars was the 440 4 BBl with the six pack an option on super bird and hemi for both.

The 1971 Super Bee 440 4v was not really an option but, yes 39 were built (all at the L.A. assbly plant) must have been a regional offering (kind of like the Western Sport Special Challengers with a 340 4v and T/A hood and spoilers). I've never heard of a 68-71 440 4v Road Runner being found (SuperBird is different).
