Window louvers close to a new owner

Post by drodg » Wed Feb 09, 2005 12:58 am

I am in the process of buying a 71 In-violet Roadrunner. Haven't seen it and doing everything by phone. What is the color of the rear window louvers? Were they all black or would they be in the body color? Thanks
Dave

From what I understand either black or body color could be correct.

There were a limited number of colors that would have come with body color louvers. The rest came black. I have the info on which colors that was at home. I'll try to dig it up tonight and post it. It is a very similiar list to the colors that the body color bumpers were available in.

Off the top of my head, I think that FC7 would have gotten black louvers, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'll confirm it tonight.

I kinda figured Dave would have the CORRECT answer... unless of course the question is "what color looks coolest on a '71?"

Dave,

Would that list cover 71 charger/Super Bee as well.

I gotta tell ya...those louvers would look sweet on my 71 FC7 Bee!

I believe the '71 Plymouths and Dodges share back windows, so my guess would be "yes". Dave, didn't Herlitz tell you in the interview that he had to make a compromize in the design of the backlight area of the '71 RR so they could share the back window with the Chargers?

I would expect that the color selection for the louvers would be the same on the Dodge, but this is Ma Mopar we are talking about. ;) It's totally possible Dodge had a completely different color aviliablity. The data I have is specific to the Plymouths (it comes from the 71 Chrysler/Plymouth dealership merchandising manual).

Bruce, yes the Dodge and Plymouth share the backlight glass, and the design that we have today is the one the Dodge designers came up with. The backlight that Mr. Herlitz had designed was a bit different. While there were 2 separate design teams, they did have some part of the organization that ketp them working together to some extent towards the use of common parts/ etc. It is important to note though that the louvers WERE different between the Dodge and the Plymouth. The centers are the same, but the outter wraps are unique.

Oh, Bruce, for the record, the coolest color on the 71 was definately GF3. ;)

GF3, eh? You dang "number" guy. Put that in ENGLISH! :D Nah, the coolest was Tor Red. Now, what's the "code" for that?

Tor Red = EV2
Amber Sherwood = GF3

What's wrong, Bruce? Don't know all the 71 paint codes from memory? ;)

Nope, I don't. Remember, I'm a graphic artist, I think of colors by their NAMES. You're a computer guy, you think of them by their CODE...

Ok Here we go. Pulled the manual out of the vault tonight, and dug up the info. I posted it in the Technical Archive, since it really seems to be something that belongs there.

Here's a link.

The quick answer is, FC7 cars would have had body color louvers. :)

body colored louvers

Post by drodg » Sun Feb 13, 2005 11:20 pm

Okay if the car is In-violet the window louvers could have been the body color but The fc7 cars did not have painted bumpers? I know the 71 Chargers in that color had that as an option but not the Roadrunners? I have seen quite a few 71 Roadrunners in purple with elastomeric bumpers but are they not correct? I also know its common to paint the bumpers and put them on chrome cars.
