1971 Factory Interior Hood Release - Info Needed
I'm trying to track down which handle is "correct" for my September built LA car. I've seen both the chrome handle and the black handle, and I currently have a black handle setup for the car. I've seen some later built (i.e. Jan/Feb) original cars (or at least cars with what are claimed to be factory parts) with the black handle, but I'd really like to figure out what came on my car, so I can put it back correctly.
Anybody have any facts/figures or at least previous research as to which handle was used when, and for how long?

I've seen some of the early built cars (road runners and chargers) with the chrome handle, however, I do not know if this was correct for the LA built cars. I remember a white charger at the nats a couple of years ago in the OEM jugded tent that I believe was an early build, but I do not remember which plant. It had the chrome handle.
I have the same problem, as I have an August built LA car with the remote that appears to have been replaced at some time with a black handle. Let me know if you find out anything more substantial.

Chrome handle
I'll keep you posted Eric. I guess for now I'll put my black handle in, and continue the search for a chrome one.
Oh, and I still haven't forgiven you for going out and finding an EARLIER Bahama Yellow Road Runner than mine.

bbeep,
My 72 Satellite had a chrome handle hood release cable which was stock until it snapped and I replaced it last month with a black handle release. The car was built in October of 71 so it was an early year production number. The black handle release had different mounting holes so it is angled a little differently. Hope this helps.

Hey bbeep
I have worked quite a few of these and so far all I have seen is the black handle for the brake release. I think the chrome one might have been an option in some but mostly al lthe ones I have seen is the black handle

Could be...
Hmmm... that could be the case. Never thought about that. I'll have to do some research on that. Does anybody have a good example of an original car, not equipped with the pedal dress up package but did have the inside hood release? I need to find a confirmed original car, as they easily could have been swapped out because of breakage, and the parts dept. replacement could have been the black one.

I do. I have an early production number 72 satellite that does not have the pedal dress up package but had the chrome horizontal handle. Mine snaped and I replaced it with a black vertical handle. The mounting holes were a little different.
Maybe it was an early production year thing. My VIN sequence number was in the 7k range.

Don't think either is available anywhere...
I don't think either one of them is currently available as a reproduction piece yet.

You can find the black handled ones on ebay occasionally, but hardly ever the chrome ones. I've been looking for a chrome one for a couple of years now!
Anyone out there have one they want to part with?
