Which pistol grip shifter is correct for my 1973 Road Runner, P code 400, bucket seats without console or buddy seat? The handle that came with my car is taller than the short one that came in my 73 Rallye Charger without console or buddyseat. I have seen a couple 73 4 speed cars with the same handle as mine, but I keep being told its the wrong one.

Where is your shifter hole located? The longer handle is for use with buddy and bench seat cars where the shifter comes through the floor in the forward position, in front of the seats.

Shorter one is common with E-bodies and the shifter hole is between the seats.

As mentioned and to elaborate just a bit; from your description, the short shifter handle should be correct for your car. The floor hump currently in the car will determine which handle fits correctly, yours should have the shifter mechanism mounted on the aft transmission mounting point, aft of the trans cross-member. Again, same components/configuration used on manual E-bodies. Bench seat and buckets with a buddy seat used a floor hump accommodating the use of the forward transmission shifter mounting point, forward of the cross-member and the longer shift handle.

The longer handle I believe would also have the bracket that lifts the shifter mech higher also. Correct??

The bucket/console manual shift mounts to the tail housing of the transmission.

The bench shifter mounts to the main housing.

Both use an adapter plate IIRC.

Technically both shifter locations are cast into the tail shaft housing of later 833s. Both require an adapter plate but the adapters are not the same for the two configurations.
