Long or short tips

I'm seeing at least two types of reproduction exhaust tips. What's correct for a 72 RR? The long ones or the short ones?

Think my car currently has the long ones, although one is now quite a bit shorter than the other.

Would depend on whether your car had resonators or not. If not I think it gets the short tips. Also think only Hemi cars had resonators but I could be wrong. Someone is bound to correct me if I am.

Show your photo again and that might help with the ID of what's on there now...

The longer pipe mounted tips are correct for Chargers. The pics you posted of your damaged tips show they are the long tips, sould have short ones.

Hemi/resonator tips are different altogether.

I was pretty sure short tips are correct.

I'll be replacing the entire exhaust system from the headers back, so what is on the car is irrelevant.

Id like the black charger tip on mine
Wish they had 3" tips to go with my new exhaust-

73 RoadRunner/GTX with 440 motor and built for California had resonators and mufflers + tips. There you go Bruce.

Last time i looked TTI pair of 3" tips were about $ 400

they are 2 tips for the 71-74 plymouth

one is short one for 440 6bbl or hemi with resonators

one is medium one 318 340 360 383 400 440 4bbl

the long one is for dodge charger 71-74 with 340 360 440 400 they use a short one for 440 6bbl or hemi and is not same one as plymouth one

3466110 - Roadrunner/GTX w/440-6 & Hemi (cars with resonators) short one
3466113 - Charger w/440-6 & Hemi (cars with resonators) short one
3466122 - Roadrunner gtx medium one
3466123 - Charger long one

According to the dealership data books for 1971. You couldn't get the deluxe exhaust tips on 383 and 440 powered cars sold new in California. They had turned down exhaust pipes in the back. I'm not sure if it applied to the Hemi cars too. I remember looking at a '71 Hemi Road Runner sitting on the showroom floor. But I can't remember if it had exhaust tips in the back, or not. I do remember that it was red, black canopy vinyl top, no stripes. Black interior, bench seat, with 4-speed. Dealership got stuck with it because the kid who ordered it couldn't get insurance for it. When the dealership tried to cancel the order. Chrysler told them it was to late, as it was already in the pipeline being built. They put the kid in a 318 Duster. They tried to talk me into buying it. I told them I wish I could, but that my insurance company told me that they'd only insure me for having a 383 in my '69 Road Runner. Anything larger, and they would of cancelled me. The insurance companies could be strange. Later on I had no problem insuring my '69 Hemi Daytona. But they were having a devil of a time finding a company to insure my '72 340 'Cuda automatic. The Daytona wasn't listed as a high performance car. !!! The 340 'Cuda was. I was 29 years old at the time. So you would of thought that age shouldn't of been a factor. I was with one of those, "We can get you low car insurance rates," companies at the time. They weren't worth the savings when you had to file a claim.

you could get tips on a 440+6 car built for CA. I know of at least one coded N42 and N97 (and it has resonators and tips)

Thanks for the tip! All kidding aside, when was the car built? I wonder if the regulations changed as the year progressed. Back then in 1972 I heard rumors that you couldn't get an air grabber hood on a big block in California. Only on the 340. But I haven't dug the data book out to see if it states anything to that effect. I know I have that one salesman's pocket guide book that doesn't even mention an air grabber hood option for the '72 Road Runners in it. Which seems sort of strange. No mention of tips in it either.

Asked my Mopar buddy at New England Classic Car, Gary (Knows his stuff), seems that everyone here is correct. The short Red-slotted tips are correct for your RR. And Bruce is correct on the fact that the long-tips are for Hemi-resonated cars.
