Dash Cap Help!!

Post by 72rrGTX » Wed Apr 27, 2011 8:11 pm

I saw a couple of old threads briefly discussing this but I was hoping for some more info. I recently put a coverley dash cap on my 72 rr gtx. I couldn't get in over the existing dash pad without covering the chromed edge of the passenger side plastic/ fake wood insert. This was really bothering me so I decided to take out the insert hoping to simply reinstall it over the new cap, which I now regret.

Unfortunately that did not work. The extra material from the cap won't let the insert fit in it's proper place and the existing screws are way to short. It's the whole round peg square hole ordeal. I saw some people trimmed away the extra material, I tried that briefly but I don't trust myself. Longer screws don't work because of the goofy mounting brackets(half open), the screws collapse in once tightened.

If anyone else had this problem, what did you do to solve it? Am j going to have to glue it? Don't want to do that but I'm at a loss. Thanks for help, posted this on bbodies as well, I need help.

I had the same problem with my cap. I used a Dremel with a metal cutting bit in the corners of the cap where it didn't fit and just took my time. The insert fits real well now. The top portion where the metal screen for the speaker goes apparently needs some more work, as it is causing the cap to bind and raise slightly on the driver's side. I'll get back to it one day.
