car wont start

Post by Clone Runner » Sun Apr 17, 2011 1:20 am

i got a problem, i thought it was the starter or the starter relay becase all it was doing when i tried to start it was click, and its not the batterie. i've since had 2 more starters on the car and they are both good and 2 starter relays and i still have the same problem, click. now for the weird thing occasionally it will work and the motor cranks easily. i think its electrical but i don't know what else to replace any ideas?

Id doubl check your neg/pos at the battery cause its a intermintant problem-corrosion maybe?
Tried the neutral safety switch at the tranny-?

Check your voltage at the starter posts. You can have a good battery, but if you have some corrosion or a loose connection between your battery and starter, then you dont have a solid 12V at the starter. That will give you the "click" that you explained - not enough juice at the starter posts.

I totally agree with the other suggestions but it also could be the balast resistor.

in my experiences, it's almost always a loose or bad connection. clean up all your connectors, coat em with some grease and you'll probably be ok. i think when my NSS was messed-up (wiring melted), it wouldn't make any sound at all - same with key switch.

Same thing happened to my 72' My pos/neg battery cables were corroded. Clean them up with a wire brush and coat them in a lubricant (grease)

It is the ignition switch. i cleaned the termanals and all the connectinos and used a test light and had power at the coil so i jumped the relay with the ignition switch in the on position and she fired right up. i knew i had some wiring issues in the stering colum because my blinkers don't work due to that switch burining up 2 years ago, been meaning to get that fixed. car is going in the shop friday and im getting everything replaced in the steering colum.
