Body moulding question for 72 RR gurus

I'm looking at a 72 RR for sale and something doesn't quite seem right to me.I haven't taken down all the fender tag #'s yet so maybe there's a moulding/trim code for this. The RR is two tone, Petty blue upper, Silver lower. The moulding starts at the front fender body line back over the wheel openings to the rear, the same as a Sat.Sebring Plus would. The interior is petty blue all except the dash which is black. The upper door panels are also the same as an SSP. It's titled as an RM23 car,but I have a feeling someone my have swapped the dash & fender tags.Anyone have any idea on moulding or trim codes that could explain this,or seen a RR ordered this way? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Rosco.

Welcome aboard.

You're almost certainly looking at a SSP with swapped tags.

If you can get the tag info, it should become apparent quickly, as those moldings would have required an additional "M##" code, like M33. I've never seen a RR with those moldings.

I had a friend in the Kansas City area who put the Satellite molding pieces down the side of his '72 Road Runner because he liked the way it looked. Which did look nice two tone because it was a full vinyl top car. That car was red with a white vinyl top, and the bottom painted silver. A sunroof car no less. Lots of rust in it when he sold it. So maybe in the past someone put the trim on this Road Runner. But from the factory, no.

Best way to verify if it is a true RM23 is to find those cowl and radiator support numbers. If they dont match the last 6 in the VIN, then you have a phony. I have posted my locations on my 71 ssp on your other post.

Are the vin #'s on the fender tag ,cowl/rad support and dash all the same? I'd question buying a car that someone swapped the tags on.

I think what rajohns is telling us is that the dash and fender tag match, but the body stampings dont match up. The usual scenario for this is somebody had a true Roadrunner that was beyond repair, and pulled the fender tag off of it and removed the dash with VIN. Then they installed the fender tag and dash into a Satellite, Satellite Sebring, or Satellite Sebring Plus of the same year to make it look like it was a RR. It is what it is, and the hope is that future owners will not try to pass it off as a true RR, but as a heavily rebodied car. :(
