Rear louver install

Is there anyone out there that has any information or pictures of installing the rear back light louvers on a 71 road runner? I bought a set without the hardware kit and just want to know for sure before i start drilling holes in the body. thank you.

Which kind did you get? The factory originals? Those only have a stud on each side for the outside frame piece. Those are the only holes I'm aware of that you have to drill in the body. I installed a set on my '72 Road Runner back in 1973 or 1974. I've had one other original car that had louvers on it. I have a set in the garage now that took me probably 20 years to get the guy to sell them to me. I haven't decided whether to put them on my current '72 Road Runner. It does get to be sort of a hassle to remove the center section so you can clean the window glass, and put it back in again. They don't flip up out of the way like E-body louvers. For the powers that be who read this post. Which cars came from the factory with the louvers painted body colored? My original car was white, and came with the louvers black.

I have a set of aftermarkets on mine. They don't look good. I believe they came from JC Whitney. I am going to take them off ASAP! Only FACTORY originals look good IMO. :rant:

Thank you for your time in the response. The set i have are the factory style. As far as i can figure out there are two 1/2 x 1 1/2 metal straps that attach to the top part of the louver surround. these straps are screwed to this piece and then to the upper window frame area. The two side pieces appear to attach to the top part with one screw on each side that are exposed when installed. At the bottom of the side pieces are a stand off that looks like it should be drilled and have a stud installed. The center section has two knobs molded into it on the left side and one on the upper right side that would slide into the two side pieces. There looks to be a section on the lower right hand side that there would be a spring loaded pin installed. I found a picture of the hardware kit on SIXPACK PERFORMANCES website which sell the these louvers, but the picture looks to have too many pieces in it for one set of louvers. So, as far as i am looking know there has to be two holes drilled to hold the top part on with nut certs installed and two holes at the bottom side pieces for the studs to go through. Anymore info or some pics would be very helpful.

Yep you pretty much have it,The brackets for the top piece attach to the body with sheet metal screws(i believe i had to thin the screw heads to clear),the side pieces attach to the top with the one screw on top and a stud on the bottom(be careful when drilling this hole as it has to be centered on the quarter panel top ridge,if it is to one side or the other you cannot get the nut on as there is not alot of room.the nut for this stud has to be installed from the trunk)And the main louver section is held on with only the spring loaded pin.

Oh be sure to remove the main louvers before blasting down the quater mile (don't ask how i know!)

I guess I was lucky. When I put them on my '72 Road Runner. I never did fasten the top piece to the window frame. I just forced it between the chrome moulding, and the body, and it never did come out. It was on the car for years. Maybe the two studs on the upright pieces helped to keep it in place.
