Using 71 quarter glass in a 72

Hi,

Trying to figure out what all needs to swap in the quarter window mechanism in order for someone to use '71 quarter windows in a '72 RR. I didn't realize they were different until recently. The glass carrier assy is definately different (I have pics of the 72 carrier assy). What's the extent of the hardware in there that needs to swap? I may have the 71 pieces here. I don't have the 72 pieces to compare though.

Thanks!
Jeff

Oh, you have to be kidding? They are different? Why the Hell would they do that?? I've never compared the two before, but I would have never thought that they were different. Well, I have no idea what the difference is, but I guess I'll find out because I had considered using the window parts from my '71 SSP on my '72.

Yeah, surprised me too! The pics I have of the 72 glass extends next to and below the carrier assy by a lot whereas the 71 glass sits in the carrier. Seems really strange to have made that change. Guess it was cheaper somehow?

Makes me wonder if you could just use an entire assembly/glass out of a '71. :?

I hate to throw salt in any wounds but I have seen the change happen in some late 71 cars, go figure, when we all thought the cat whiskers were the same I found out they changed them in mid 71 production, thanks to a member on the nest that had 1 nos piece of the complete original set and then the quarter glass change. Dont ask me when this happened because I do not know, but I have talked and seen pics of the glass difference before the 72 was released.

Without seeing a picture to clearify, cant you cut the glass to fit in the carrier?

The rear 1/4 glass in my April '72-built SSP is tempered glass, which can't be cut. :(

That would make more sense to me...not sure why the carrier design would have changed, but I would have guessed that the entire assembly could be swapped. In any event, I do have bot '71 and '72 glass in good shape so I hope I won't need to find out.

I am a bit concerned about a set of upper door and 1/4 panels that I bought years ago...I was told they were 71/72 and are the SSP/GTX-style...I hope they fit the 72. I still haven't bought the 'whiskers' or window felts yet so it may not matter.

All 2-door upper interior panels, front & back. Will interchange between the '71 to '74 B-bodies. Where it gets tricky is whether you want the car to be "correct" for a restoration. Then yes, there can be differences between them.

*wipes brow*

Good to know, thanks for the heads-up.

But this quote from AZ-Nick concerned me:

"when we all thought the cat whiskers were the same I found out they changed them in mid 71 production, "

whoops, nevermind. I did some searching and found the reference from AZ Nick:

"Yes that is the problem, Norm (General) and I have done some serious checking and we have found that the 71 year piece changed on or about October 1st 1970.
I have been working with Norm and the manufacture TopCat on this problem and we have finally figured it out and how to resolve it.
The manufacture is awaiting from Norm a fresh NOS part to duplicate and this should correct this problem.
This means that some cars had received the part like you received in the Kit from the factory and some cars received the part like your original piece.

My 71 uses the part in the KIT, my car was built sept 24, I am sure some plants may have had more stock than others so the date may be off a little."
