Crankshaft polishing/turning

Post by Smellslike1974 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:34 am

So my pistons are all out and I can get a good look at the condition of my crankshaft.Since I have no clue what I'm looking at I'm not sure If It needs attention or not.I've googled trying to find pics of cranks that people say need to be turned but no luck.At which point does a crankshaft need to be polished,or turned? And before anyone asks yes I'm getting new main bearings, new bearings for everything to be exact. 8)

Here Is a pic of what i think* the dirtiest/worst spot I see.I had taken my finger along It to feel It,its really smooth but I didn't wipe It down or clean It before picture.

Id imagine that it needs to be polished regardless..

doesn't look horrible, but i'd still have your crank turned down to get it cleaned-up and use the correct bearings.
mine was pretty bad - it was taken down .020 - you could probably get away with .010 i think it cost $150 to grind the crank. hopefully, your machine shop experience will be much better than mine was, though

it was supposed to take 3 weeks...ended up being over 3 months, cost me an additional $300 on top of esitmate, plus he forgot to put in a galley plug, leaving me with 0 oil psi
