Questions for those w/ factory Rear Defrost in a 71/72

Post by Dave » Sat Jun 12, 2010 7:56 pm

Hey all!

Working on Project Blue Bird, and I just want to confirm a couple things. For anybody that has an original rear defrost car, if your car has the original package shelf, which did it have - with speaker grilles or without? Also, does the bezel sit flush to the package shelf cardboard, or does it stand up about 1/8th inch above it?

Thanks in advance!

From what I saw over the years of pulling them out of cars in the wrecking yards. The '71 to '74 cars that have the rear window defroster option. Use the package shelf tray that has the factory punchouts for like if your car had a rear speaker. Yes, the middle defroster vent sits on top of the package tray about a quarter inch or so. Now according to the dealer data book. Supposibly you could get a '74 2-door Satellite model & Road Runner with an optional rear window defogger that has the heater lines in the window glass! The car came equipped with a 60 amp alternator in it to put out enough juice to make it work. I've only seen it in the book. But never saw one in person. Or at least out here in California.

My '71 charger 500 had factory air and rear speakers but I can not find a picture on the net with the setup it had. Best I could do was sketch it.

Image

It basically looked like what 72RoadRunnerGTX pictured but instead of a flat looking plate that the motor mounted on in the center it was a oval ring and the motor was offset to the side and the speaker mounted to the bottom of the spacer. The car was was about 90% factory when I bought it so I assume this was as well but never seen another rear defrost like it on the web. I know that spacer did not look home made but factory. <??shrug??>
