71' RR rim options and production question
Anyone know what size and rim options were available and possible?
Also, does anyone know when the last roadrunner was produced for 1971 and when the production line of 1971 cars ended? I'm trying to find out if my RR was one of the last few produced that year. Anyone else have late bloomer RR's?
To the moderators, sorry I actually meant for this to go into the question and answer section. My mistake.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
What plant did your car come from? Also need the last #,s of the vin. I' not a expert on the production #'s but this is what you need to figure it out. This sound like a question for Galen Govier.
Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
She came from the St. Louis, MO plant and it was the 129,775th one built, and the fender tag says June 10, 1971, order number 040964. Tried the galen govier route, been a year so far and no response. He only responds to the "rare" ones that are hemis, or one of one,or the first of production cars.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
I have an extensive database of 71-72 road runners (as well as Satellites and GTXs), probably more than Galen has. The latest build date I have for both road runners and GTXs in the 71 model year is July 9, 1971.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
Which type of rims was most common for 71' RR's? Since I don't have a legible broadcast sheet, I was planning on going with the most commonly used rims. I decided to keep the car the way she came and rebuild the #'s drivetrain. I figured that the magnum 500 rims might be the most commonly used. I really want to go with plymouth division dog dishes and steel rims and am not sure if RR's had that option either.
Looking at 15x7, always thought the 14x5.5 looked a little goofy and too small on our cars.
I'm just curious how many more Roadrunners were produced after mine. I know the production numbers were little over 14,000 for 71'.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
My car came with 14x6 black steel wheels with trim rings and hubcaps. I am just getting ready to mount my tires next week.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
Probably the most common wheel on 71 runners is the Rallye wheel (W21 in the photo). This was available in 14x5.5 and 15x7 sizes. The road wheel (sometimes referred to as magnum 500) was only available in 14" sizes (although you can buy repops in 15x7). Plain steel wheels were available in 14x5.5, 14x6, and 15x7 sizes with full hubcaps as well as the dog dishes. To be correct for your late build car, the plain steel wheels would be painted black (earlier cars would be body color).

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
Eric,
Did the 71 cars come with the dog dishes that had "plymouth division" stampings on them or did they have plain dog dishes? Which do you think looks better on our cars: the ralleys, road wheels, or steelies?

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
I think the early production cars also had the black wheels if they had the W-12 option ( trim rings and hubcap )

Early cars may have had the plymouth division stamping, but for most of the 71 model year they would have been plain.pats71' wrote:Eric,

I personally like the plain steel wheels painted body color, but I don't care as much for them black. I think second best are the rallyes....but that's just a matter of personal taste.

Re: 71' RR rim options and production question
I thought about going with steelies and painting them curious yellow to match the body. Good to know about the plain hubs. My old man said that I would have to find the plymouth division ones but since mine was built towards the end of 71 production, it probably had the plain ones. The only reason I might go with black steelies is you can't tell when they're dirty. With yellow, it'll be clear as day.
That's the only thing that really bugs me about the car is not knowing what wheels it came with. It has everything else but the d*** wheels.
I had to laugh earlier cause I guess my girlfriend tried to get my car on overhaulin but is pissed cause it's the off season lol.

Yeah, she's come a long way from not knowing what a lug nut was or not knowing how to pop the hood on her focus
