'71 440 intake correct casting number?

Post by NOrrTH » Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:48 pm

In my effort to stop my air cleaner lid from rubbing on the air grabber assembly I bought an intake manifold that I thought was original to a '71 440-4 Now I'm getting conflicting reports as to whether the correct intake should be:

For the 1970 model year 2951736
while 1971 models only used 3512501

This nasty link says they arent interchangable:

http://books.google.com/books?id=apwrbs ... te&f=false

since my car is a '71 I bought the 35125501 and it has a wacky date code of 11 X 10 whatever the hell that means.

One of the other members here kindly told me that Galen Goviers book says it should be the 2951736 but as mentioned, a couple of other resources say thats only for 1970.

MyMopar site confirms the 351 #

Does anyone have a survivor and know for sure?

for a 1971 440 is 3512501 :D

you can use any 66 -78 440 intake on a 71 440

but you need the right carb for the year of intake that you use

66- 72 use afb and avs and holleys 73 -78 use tq carbs

72 440 hp or lp came with holley 600

71 440 hp or 440 lp came with carter avs no holleys
4966 lp c-bodys 625 cfm a/t
4967 hp b e bodys 750 cfm m/t
4968 hp b c e bodys 750 cfm a/t :D

Whats the build date on your Motor means alot if motor was assembled on say 10 month of 70, doubt very much if your intake would be dated 71, numerious intakes will fit it like was already posted by a few members, are you trying to make this, a # matching (date) motor?

Well Im happy to hear that numerous intakes will fit the 440. I got scared when I read that they arent interchangable on that link from the restoration book. Thats all that really matters now that I know its my air cleaner base thats giving me my head ache. No one is making them either. Year One has some generic fiberglass POS, and thats it.

If I was going to have to buy a new intake, I was trying to get it numbers matching ya. The car was built in Sept '70 so I guess thats where the confusion lies; when they cut off using the 295 and went to 351.

Actually, mid-late July '70 is when F-1970 series production ended :D Some examples from the B-plant Hamtramck cars below.

Thanks for the great information, howeverI'm missing the significance of the fender tags?

That 2nd tag looks like someone reattached the tag with incorrect screws and stuck the diff tag under it?

Any idea why there is no casting date on top of my intake? Only a weird "11 X 10" on the bottom. If the 10 was 70 i could see it being Nov 70 but its pretty clearly a "1"

Just using the fender tags to show the July SPD's (Scheduled Production Date). One is 710 and the other is one of the latest I have seen(724)

For what it's worth, my GTX is all original and untouched, the X build date is 927, it is a E code as in Los Angeles and my intake is a 3512501.
My X has a few 70 only parts which is always confuseing and the oddest part on the car is that my car is a 4sp but from the factory it was deliverd with an Auto carb. I have done some research on this and I was told that an auto carb was sometimes substituted when their supply would be exhausted because there would be no difference in power, on the other hand, they could not reverse this action if they ran short of the auto carb and put a 4sp carb on the car. It doesn't make sense to me but I didn't build them so I will never know if this was true or bogus.

Hey Nick,

Smae here on my GTX(Dec. '70 St.Louis car), it has a '70 style 4-spd console with the seat belt holder and no ashtray... The '71 383 4-spd RR I used to own was the same way (Sept. '70 SPD Windsor car).
