17" rims - where to buy?

Post by JimF » Tue Jul 07, 2009 2:13 am

What 17" rims are available and compatible with a 71 Satellite/RR? I'm looking to buy a set ASAP, but I don't know where to look.

Any advice?

Thanks.

if they're 5*4.5 bolt circle, the rest is up to you in regards to back-spacing and width, then choosing your tire size. they make a 17" slot mag now...i might consider them down the road

I'm looking for a 17x9 or 17x8 rim. As for the offset and backspacing, that's what I really don't feel comfortable with. I was hoping that there would be some rims out there that were already made for my car and therefore, would have the correct offset & backspace.

I know that American Racing has a few rims available, but I think they're all pretty ugly. I really dislike the crager-esque 5 spoke design.

If you know of a retailer that can help, I'm all ears.

Thanks.

i would think if you went with an offset similar to a stock wheel, you would be fine...probably between 4.25 and 4.5, then you just have to look at tire sizes to make sure your sidewalls don't rub. "471Magnum" had some killer 17" wheels on his 71 GTX ...try to PM him

Not to thread jack, but just want to congratulate you guys on embracing new technology (larger wheels), but not overdoing it (anything over 17"). A lot of guys either can't get over the 14" OEM size thing, or try to put 20s on it which just looks dumb. Ugh, saw a late '80s Camaro today with 20-22s on it going down the highway. At first I thought it was an AMC Eagle when it approached from behind because it sat so high! Very dumb!

Anyway, I think a nice, murdered-out multispoke "Hockenheim" style wheel would be perfect! Maybe even a thin red lip.

There's a '71 or '72 RR or Sat in a magazine a while back that's red with white wheels that looks pretty good. Larger, wider wheels, but not overdoing it. You may know what I'm talking about. Looked awesome. I'll try to dig it up.

it's the GTX-R...pretty cool car. 17s aren't really my style at this point, but pretty soon it's gonna have to be, then, i'll be having to change to discs since drums will look ridiculous. i'm glad they're making slot mags in 17" now, as it's the best looking wheel for our cars imo and it's getting hard to find tires for my 14" mags. pretty soon 15" will be extinct too probably. what really ticked me off is summit, etc. lists the tires i have on my car at approx $70-75 each. i ended up paying close to $600 for 4 tires  meanwhile, i can get tires for my mustang at $450 for all 4 - go figure

This thread got me looking for some 17" rallye style rims. I only found 2 and both are ehhhhhh...... you think someone could make a more accurate looking billet 17" one, but I guess they want them a bit more stylized.

I think if you took elements from both of those rims you could have a good looking rim. Like take the 95 series from Wheel Vintiques and make the cutout openings a bit bigger and give them that flare around those openings more like the original rallyes you would have a winner or add a bigger better center cap design to the foose wheels and get them in a non polished finish. I suppose you could bead blast the foose rims to give a better finish but then they are way expensive already to have to modify them.

Well, I finally found some rims that I liked and put them on the car. 17" Ion 625's, 9 inches wide.

I'm running 255/45s all around.

A pic is attached.

Oh, I forgot to mention - 0mm offset, 5" backspace. They fit with no clearance problems whatsoever!
