Okay awhile back I did some designing on MS Paint of ideas I had in my head about my car.One of the things I thought about and designed was a custom made fiberglass breather for my engine.I mainly wanted this because I am making the vents in my hood actually work(just cutting holes),and the breather i want to make would fit and stick out so when the hood is close the vents and the intake would meet together for better breathing..well at least i think It would.there's a lot i have to trouble shoot and find out yet when building it.The main question Is Is it possible to have a fiberglass breather?Its probably a stupid question but i wanna know anyway.ha ha.I asked my dad and he said it would most likely catch fire.I don't get how that would happen seeing there's fiberglass hoods.then again the breather is closer to the engine.I would most likely use the bottom metal piece of a stock breather,just so its stronger and i have something to build off of with the fiberglass.

If fiberglass doesn't/cant work ill have to find something else i can use like it.

It sounds good to me. I don't think it would burn unless you have flames coming from the carb. and don't use the air cleaner. I think an air box from a 69 runner would be a good start. Sure you would have to do some creative glass work. It would be cool. you could use an air grabber air cleaner ( no chance of a fire it's steel), and have doors (operated with cables) on the vents to keep water out.

Hey,that vent door Idea Is really good.I never took weather Into consideration.

Here Is what i basically had In mind.

Only thing Is,there's a lot of room between the carburetor up to the vents.I wouldn't want this too look to big or take away from the engine.Maybe the arms that stick out would have a climb to them in order for them to connect with the vents.Unless.....I could just have those parts built into the hood already and just have a modified regular circle intake....Hmmmm.I gotta go back and create something like that.

Now you got me thinking. Back in the 70's there was the maverick grabber. They had a fresh air induction hood, I don't know if it was cable or vacuum operated. The hoods (if memory serves me correct) had the two scoops that I don't think were too far off ( as far as location) from the ones on the 73 and 4 runners. I know that those prices are probably up there because of the rarity of the grabber. Maybe looking at one of them would give you some ideas.

Oh, and I forgot, the 69 air grabber box has openings on the sides. That would make it a little easier to run the runners for the fresh air from the hood vents to the air box.

I redid my previous idea with making It smaller in mind.Instead of having the arms that the air will channel through on the breather itself,i figured i could just make them apart of the underside of the hood.So when closed the hood will complete two air tunnels that run from the hood vents into the intake.(breather).

Here's what I came up with.It was done in a rush so things aren't proportioned correctly. .Ill have to make some actual pen/pencil sketches later on.

(The side view:The blue is what would be part of the hood.That would remain on the hood opened and closed.The other part its connected to is obviously the breather.)

Yeah these designs do almost no justice to what i am actually picturing in my head.Though its a good idea of it.

And to chime in, I wouldn't think the Fiberglass and engine heat should have any serious problems. If you're worried about that, I'd even consider painting the fiberglass with engine enamel. ..

I used to have a 70 Buick GS Skylark with the Ram Air. dont have a pic available, but it semmed like a very simple set-up. Worth a look into.

I have still been thinking about this idea.For awhile i may just have the stock breather,maybe this idea will be a later on type of deal.


After all getting the car done is more important then worrying about a fiberglass project.

Dont know if this is a dead thread, but I was looking at the bottom of my 74 RR hood, and I could swear that the bottom reinforcement brace was stamped and cut for a 71-72 air grabber set-up. Did they use the same underhood reinforcement for 73-74? Hmmmmm!

Yea, all the plymouth b bodies (2 doors) have the same under hood bracing.
