71 GTX- PAINT ORG. OR A DESIREABLE COLOR

Post by onerare71gtx » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:28 am

Hello, I'm new here and have a question for everyone. I have a rust free #'s matching 71 gtx that is an original gun metal gray, black vinyl top, black interior car that was repainted sassy grass green but is a poor quality job. I'm in the prosess of having it sanded down to bare metal to start fresh and I do intend to sell the car. So the ? is would I be beter off painting it ev2 hemi orange with no vinyl top and front and rear spoilers or back to original? The reason I am asking is I have been told my cars color is rare because no one liked it and it would probably be a hard sell that color? Any input would help me out alot.

Thanks, Jim

For a car as original as yours, I'd say paint it back the original color. There are plenty of clones out there that are high impact colors, and draw attention, but if you change the color, your car is no longer a matching numbers car. (The paint doesn't match the numbers on the data plate) And Gunmetal gray is a good looking color on these cars, check out some pictures on here and other places, you may be surprised. It may not be a slap you in the face sort of color, but it sure is classy.

You may not want to forget, there were less than 3,000 total 71 GTX's made, think about it, that's almost as rare as a superbird. Only 1/3 more GTXs' made in 71 than Superbirds in '70

I agree. Back to original. Really worth more that way.
Who tells you it needs "look at me paint" to sell?

Look here to see how nice gunmetal grey looks on a '71-'72. It one of my favorite colors.

In 1971 out of all of the Satellites, Roadrunners and GTXs made only 4071 were painted that color. http://www.roadrunnernest.com/TA_Paint.htm

I agree with painting it to original. I think the color is cool. It may not have been a popular selection back in 1971, but many folks will agree, it's cool now.....and a bit rare! I pass right by ads where the car has been repainted a common "popular" color rather than an original. I see car such as that to be in need of a full repaint, no matter how fresh it is. Of course, it really is all up to the owner, but if you are going to sell it, definitly go original.

I have to say gun metal gray is one of my frvorite colors so you know my vote goes for factory correct. I think if you wanted a different color you could buy a non matching numbers car and then "Build it like you want it." You could paint it whatever, put a crate hemi and a six speed transmission, maybe a tublar k-frame, 4 wheel disc brakes w/drilled rotors,18 inch Boyd wheels. Man did I get carried away on all that or what? I just had you build a new resto mod and spend several thousand more dollars than just original color paint.
I said "Don't look Ethel, but it was to late."

Well, it's been awhile. I never ended up selling the gtx as no one thought it was worth anything. I can't believe the crap that sells on ebay for 15,000 and I couldn't even get that for a spotless rust free, numbers matching gtx with rebuilt motor, trans, front end and mint interior, all the car needed was paint. Anyways, I decided to keep the car and make it the car I wanted instead of selling it for nothing and buying someone elses thrown together junk. I know I'm gonna get for changing an original gtx but I really don't car as the car was for sale for a year and no one wanted it, so it is now EV2 orange, deleted the vinyl top and ugly rocker mouldings, added air grabber hood and front/rear spoilers along with weld ultra lite rims, had k-frame reinforced in steering box area and boxed lower control arms, added firm feel tubular upper control arms and firm feel steering box along with poly bushings. Lol I think people really need to get over the original bit as the prices of these cars has fallen dramaticly and no one really cares if its all original or not unless you have a concours restored car that someone wants to add to there collection, all others fall into the I love your car but I would never pay that much for it, as I am seeing with my 71 charger r/t that everyone loves but no one will buy unless I give it away. This hobby is now once again a hobby and not the investment option it turned into, thank god.

Do you want to sell those "ugly rocker mouldings"?

When i first picked up my 72 Satellite Sebring Plus everyone suggested that I paint it Green or Purple. My 72 is original GY9 and although not everyones cup of tea.....I like it and that is all that matters to me. I want to keep it original because when I take it to local shows it stands out in a different way because most people have never seen one in this colour. My other project is also a 71 GTX and it is yellow and I agree a GTX is worth more when kept original......A car is only original once. I am happy I did not change colours

Sometimes I get to feeling that if Xmas, Fathers Day and my Birthday did not exist, then aftershave too would not exist.

good for you for painting it and doing the mods that you wanted to do - anything can be brought back to stock regarless of the mods - I say anything that inspires you to drive it is ok in my books...

I'm all for original, but its your car. My roadrunner is originally GY3 curious yellow and it's going back that way, but that's cause I love that color too.

I too am feeling the original color quandry.

I have a 71 gy3 GTX. Not numbers matching engine, but otherwise mostly original. In the process of restoration right now and have always thought I would keep it gy3 because it is cool and of course it is rare too. What I have noticed though, is that one of the reasons these high impact colors were so cool in the day is because cars just weren't painted raucous greens, yellows and oranges. They really stood out.

I have noticed that now many modern sports cars (new challengers, corvettes and new camaros) are all using these high impact colors - particularly yellow - so part of me finds the old subtle gun-metals, browns and greens on muscle cars all the more appealing.

I'm still divided - but have a solution that I maybe comfortable with. My all time favorite mopar color is f8 ivy green - which of course was never offered on our fusalage bodies.

I think it would be stunning to have an f8 ivy green gtx. (Attached a f8 cuda pic to see the color). In spite of it not being an original color - don't you all think it would be a nice looking ride? If anyone has this combo - I'd love to see a pic.
