"Dash Caps"
I've seen some on racks at the Nats and they looked pretty good on the stand. I think I saw one or two in cars but the owners where not around for a close inspection. They did look like a cap not a real dash pad but for my money they looked a whole lot better than a rug cover or my crappy dash pad. I plan on skipping a carpet cover and go for the "dash Cap" One day I may be able to afford to send mine out for a rebuild or find a mint one on eBay but that is long in the future for me.

I'm pretty happy with the way my cap turned out on my 71. Make sure you install the cap first, then insert the woodgrain dash panel over the cap. This makes the cap look natural. I had some trouble getting the speednuts back on the studs behind the panel, but eventually succeeded.
I think the 71 and 72's are good candidates for the cap, because even the original pads had a pretty high gloss to them.
