Charcoal canister on a 1972

Post by N96RR1972 » Tue Nov 11, 2008 7:52 am

Can anyone show pictures of the proper vacuum tube routing for a charcoal canister on a 1972 340 Roadrunner?...Also I have seen other years (73/74?) with additional vacuum pieces that go on the firewall, Did 1972 have these?...Any help would be great ..Thanks

Not a 340, but might be useful.

John, besides the lines to the fuel tank and carb bowl vent, the third line directly on the canister connects to a tee fitting in the PCV line. The smallest fitting, on the diaphragm atop the canister, connects to another tee fitting in the vacuum advance line. Vapors are metered back through the PCV intake at two deferent rates depending on the throttle position as determined by the vacuum advance line. Good idea to check the diaphragm with a vacuum pump as small holes tend to develop over time.

Here's some pix from my 1972 Road Runner. This is the stock unit that came with the car. I has a 440 engine so I don't know if a 340 would be the same. The port that is capped off is the carb bowl vent as the new Holley carb I put on it doesn't have that vent.

The other ports are as desciribed in another post.

This image shows the "T" fittings on the distributor vacuum and PVC hoses that connect to the two ports on the raised round part of the cannister.

Here's a link to the PhotoBucket page with full size images 2400x2400 of the ones above if you need more detail.

Hope this helps.
