It's definitely doable with the right tools. I've seen pictures of one that someone did and it came out great--indistinguishable from the real thing.

After numerous contacts with foreign objects in its lifetime, the rear cut-out valance on my 72’ project was pretty well mangled. Had a decent valance from one of the donor cars, much less effort to transfer the cut-outs than to repair the original. Although the 71 and 72 valances are not the same, I assume the lower edge is pretty close. Creating a template from the original, found the tail pipe cut-outs on the Sat valance to extend outside the tip cut-out profile. I welded a small triangular shaped piece of sheet metal to fill. As some of you know, the so called non-cut-out valance will have smaller/wider cut-outs for the turn down tail pipes. This fill area cannot be seen viewed from the rear and may not be a concern to everyone. The “roll†on the cut-out is more of a sight fold and was really pretty easy to duplicate with hand tools.

I did not use slotted tips, Instead I used a very good quality tip that I liked and I cut the valance to match the tips......Not as original, But I think it came out nice....Here are a few pictures.....

As in why rework the rear valance? You 71’ guys may have recently acquired the option the buy a reproduction cut-out valance for $250, to the best of my knowledge, those of us with 72’s still must work with used original panels. Decent used 72’ rear valances are pretty scarce, original cut-out versions, almost non-existent from my experience. Besides, I rather work with any original sheet metal panel over a repo panel any day.

My rear panel was already cut for square tips (like the dart uses) I cut them round to match the tips I liked...Besides, it's not only the $250 I saved, I did not have to remove, re-install or repaint my valance...I cut it out rounded on the car and put a slight flange on the cut without having to paint it....It took a total of about an hour and a half to do it and I think it looks great...

You saved more then $250, the tips (slotted cost around $225), Don't forget about the cost of paint and the labor or your time to install it and shoot it. I think it looks good, and I like the fact that you can do it while it's on the car.

I’ve been told for years now that repo quarter panels were “almost ready†for these cars. Anyone here get their hands on them as of yet? I appreciate the quality reproduction part manufactures for their efforts to produce parts for these cars but I can’t wait indefinitely for some of these parts.

Quarter panels are coming available. I saw prototype quarters at Carlisle and the Nats, and they look GOOD. From what I understand, there was some final tweaking and test fitting to be done and they'd go into production. They should be available soon if they're not already available.
