Chin Spoiler attachment question

Post by 71Runner » Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:41 am

I think we've covered the fact that the chin spoilers were a dealer installed option, therefore placement remains variable, with nothing being "factory correct". Did we establish the correct way of attaching these though? I was at Carlisle a few years ago when I came upon a red Hemi '71 RR that was supposed to be all original. These spoilers were attached with black, large headed rivets. Others I've seen attach with nuts and bolts. Is this another case of everything being acceptable, or was one method practiced over another? I've held off putting on my NOS pieces for years now. Thanks.

Take this with a grain of salt, but when I bought my Miata new back in 1993, I ordered every factory ground effect option there was (rear wing, dam spoiler, painted mud guards, etc.) and damn that car looked good. One day I was opening the trunk because the rear wing was getting a little loose on one side and noticed the wing bolts were all different looking. Grrr...

Additionally, the front lip was held on by those push-in plastic screws. One day my friend was driving my car (it was lowered with Koni ride-height adjustable shocks) and parked too close to a curb stop and lots of the plastic rivets popped out. Over time, it was time to get some new plastic push rivets. Sure, I probably could've went to the local parts store, but being anal about stuff like this, I went to the dealer to get the "correct" ones. Well, he had a guy that could've been my long lost brother who got into crack and did some time go in the back and search through a baggy of ones that could work.

So in my experience, the dealer probably used whatever they had on hand at the time. Of course, this was with Mazda and was a relatively modern car, and that could vary from the quality Chrysler was putting out at the time, though I doubt it.

Speaking of that, mine seem to have a little tweak in them near the very end. Does this tweak go on the fender side or the front valance piece?

well, all i've heard about ma mopar and fiberglass is they don't get along...if you see an aar cuda or a challenger t/a that actually have factory and not new fiberglass hoods on them - they almost always stick up toward the rear passenger side of the hood...

maybe a defect in the fiberglass - not really sure what you're talking about - but i've thought about front spoilers on my car, so i better learn some more  - not so big on the go wing

I haven't looked at mine for years, but I thought the originals were made of plastic, and the repros were fiberglass, perhaps I got it backwards? I know that they have pentastars and part numbers on them.

i guess it does say on an ebay link for a pair of repops that they are made of the same textured black plastic as original....not a bad deal at 60 bux....then the go wing is what 400

I found a wing at Carlisle about 8-9 years ago. Original, showing a little age, but all there. I got it for like 150.00 or so. The highlight of the weekend for sure.
