71 sebring plus grill color

Post by ROGERLEE » Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:56 pm

i have a 71 sebring plus and the grill is all black, no paint, just black plastic, there is this fella on ebay now selling 71 72 roadrunner/gtx grille and he said the only ones black was gtx and road runner....with the silver argent type painted surrounds, does anyone know for sure?? , mine looks to be original, no paint whatsoever?? i think mine is right for my car, i mean the sebring plus was right up there with the gtx for price and options,

I am 99% sure that guy who said that is wrong. I have several photo's of the 1971 Satellite Sebring Plus with the black grille having the surrounding argent silver (the lip/light openings). This car is a survivor, 71 Sebring Plus. http://www.classicmopars.net/1971_plymo ... _pluss.htm

Road Runner and GTX grilles were black plastic with argent around the headlights and the lower lip. Satellite grilles were painted silver.

This came up a couple weeks ago in the "headliner" post. My response from that one:

To the best of my knowledge, the road runner (RM), GTX (RS), and SSP (RP) all got the black and silver grilles. If you look in the parts book, it lists a different part number for these than for the 2dr SS (RH). If there was a mid year switch over, I'm not aware of it. That's not to say that if parts ran out on the assembly line they wouldn't have been substituted....

I just re-painted my grill myself. I'm very pleased how they came out. Sorry, I didnt take any pix and I bubble wrapped them up until the car is ready for them. It was VERY tedious process with taping but all n all, turned out great.
BTW- I used Ma Mopar P/N P4529876 Argent wheel paint that you can get at any dealer. 8-)

if they ever reproduce the 72 (RR/GTX package) grille, those insane prices people pay for cracked up crap, will be long gone!

I know its a pain painting the black w/silver...it looks great when finished.

Off subject, here is a 71 Sebring Plus, from an Oct 1970 article. Notice the rear window, exhaust, and the rubber strip running along the rear bumper. Who ever ordered this car was. :stirpot:

idk i can see doing it if you're getting a 2 door car and using it for practical reasons - i guess you probably won't mess-up a chrome bumper hitting it with your groceries, but it might save it a lil bit

Then that would be the ONLY practical thing about the car....a 440+6 4spd super trak pack (4.10 gears)!!!!
