A good vinyl and/or interior paint?

Back in the early 80's, my brother spray painted the entire interior of his '72 Datsun 510 (2-door auto for anyone interested). I don't think repro 510 interior parts were too common back then and he didn't have the time or money to replace the white interior with his desired black.

He did the headliner, door panels and *I think* seats.

Over the years since, the car developed the usual rust on the panels and today badly needs some metal work... But darned if that interior isn't still 100% black. Almost no nicks or chips or scratches to indicate there's a white interior under that 25+ year old spray job.

My question is - anything good for that kind of thing, today? I've got a pretty decent rear bench in my Satellite and could probably repair the few holes and get away without recovering (and use the precious cash for other stuff). Can a seat be painted anymore -- sans lead, I assume, these days -- and have it actually withstand the test of time like my brother's?

my back seat and front passenger seat has been dyed 4 times now...once black(previous owner from blue), once white(me), black with bright blue inserts, and then all black.......i used the vinyl and fabric dye you can get at oreilley's or maybe even walmart (don't remember if they have it or not). the back seat and passenger front have given me no problems at all...the only seat i've had trouble with is the driver's and it was kinda crapy to begin with...the surface is scuffed up, so it cracks and such in that area...just touch it up once in awhile......keep in mind that that seat wasn't in excellent shape as the others were :D

PS when doing bucket seats, take the seat backs off so you don't forgetfully fold one forward.....makes for a nasty mess to clean up
