74 Bulge Hood

Post by Serious Satellite » Sun Nov 11, 2007 12:27 am

and 73, I know.

I have hand sanded the engine side of the hood to take care of the rust issues and would like to disassemble the hood inserts and bezels from the top of the hood before priming, etc.

Is there anything special--i.e. surprise, you screwed it up with that move--that I need to be aware of before I start into this disassembly? I have the paint and the primer for the car now, gonna do it myself since I can't afford the 13 thousand to restore it and I'm pretty stoked.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Stay stoked and don't mind the silent treatment... those 71/72 guys tolerate us but that doesn't mean they have to like us.

I don't think there's anything special to taking those inserts off. Only problem I can forsee is hanging on to the fasteners: I don't know what the availability is.

I'm considering making some tinted plexi to go in my insert holes and putting some red LEDs or neons in there. The effect (if the tint is right) should be a subtle glow at night from those cool inserts. Ok, I know it's a tad below my age group, but what the hell. I think it'll look cool.

I don't know if the 73/74 scoops are the same plastic material as the 71/72 hood depression bezels. Do they have mounting studs? If they are, be careful unbolting them. If the attaching nuts are rusted and/or don't break loose easily, it's very easy to end up turning the studs. This usually ends up breaking them loose from the bezel, stripping the threads in the plastic...you get the idea.

I'll have a better answer on the plastic parts of the hood tomorrow.

I have the hood prepped. The hood has been sanded down -- by hand since there was some discussion somewhere about warping the hood with power tools, not that I believe it totally but didn't want to chance it-- and I've acid treated the rust. Tomorrow the scoop bevels comeoff and that area prepped.

I will be using Rust Bullet on the engine side of the hood. Looking forward to seeing how that works. Their new gloss black should be pretty decent on the underside. Small rust spots on the top side have been treated similarily and will be Rust Bulleted as well. I'm painting a black base coat and I'm using Mopart's Roller Brush Method. (I hear a collective groan). I remember my grandfather painting his cars the same way, and his cars always looked real good. It's all I can afford.

Budget constraints being what they are, it is time consuming but very satisfying right now. Both windshield and rear windows are out--a lot of help from the guys on the Nest, thanks guys-- and I'm pleased that 99 percent of the lip is rust free. Only one area about four inches long near the bottom corner of the rear window has suffered rust damage, but the Parasol metal filler from Rolls Royce will clean that up.

I know, I'm rambling. I had thought that the trunk was ruined, but once I cleaned the "Tar" out of the trunk (the previous owner coated the trunk and the underside of the car with a tar like substance) , it revealed a pretty decent trunk with only two small holes near the trunk extensions. Much smaller than I expected. Still looking for rear quarters.
