Hood Hinge

Post by aerodynamic » Sun Aug 05, 2007 9:17 am

Hey all, does anyone know of a place where hood hinges can be sent for repair? I think mine are bad. The hood sits up like half an inch (over the hinges) when it's closed, and the hinges do appear to be adjusted as far down as they'll go. If I push down on the rear part of the hood they'll sit level, but then they come up again after driving.

Input??

Check out:

www.smsmopar.com

They restore hinges, door hinges, e-brakes, heater boxes, and steering columns. Hope this helps

Yeh, similar issue on my passenger side. It wants to lift up and inch or so unless I push down on it after I close the hood.

Seems like SMS does nice work but it seems $200 to rebuild them is a bit much for my budget. I need a cheap quick fix.

I've seen the rebuild kits on ebay from time to time, they go for about $35. Another option is to get a good used set of charger hinges and springs (stronger spring). Sets often sell for 20 -25.

I really thought I was the only one with this problem. Maybe we should start a support group, lol!

I couldn't help but notice the sh*t eating grin on the driver of the above b-body. It IS a great feeling isn't it? :-)

Have adjusted my 73 RR/GTX and my son's 71 Charger this way and worked great. Had the same problems you guys had. From Rick's Restorations

http://www.restorick.com/tech/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10

[quote]Before removing the hood hinges, it can be helpful to make alignment references with masking tape on the hood and fenders.
Also note the alignments to the fenders so you know what you have. With the fenders incorrectly aligned, the hood to fender gaps will not be parallel.

With a helper or 2, unbolt the hood from the hood hinges and remove.
Then remove the hinges from the inner fender.

For reinstalling, bolt the hood hinges to the inner fender at about midway in the vertical adjustment slots. Install the hood to the hinges.

Front to rear adjustments are on the hood side area of the hinges.
Up & down adjustments are on the inner fender area of the hinges.
Side to side movement is controlled by the latch positioning and fender side bumpers.
On rare occasions the side position has to "tweaked" by a push on the rear of the hood to the side, causing slight bending of the hinge arms.
The front height is controlled by the bump stop studs with the rubber caps.

A common alignment problem on E-body & 71-up B-bodies is with the rear hood edge being up too high with the hinges being adjusted all the way down on the inner fender.
This is an adjustment problem! Start by moving the hinge up on the inner fender. (yes, up!)
Then, loosen the 2 rear bolts and leave the front bolt snug. Now lift the hood to make the hinge rotate (as viewed from the side). Retighten the rear bolts and check the fit. This procedure will get that tail to come down. Adjust the front-to-rear dimension on the hood side bolts.
It can be frustrating and take some time, but these hoods will fit correctly! I’ve installed them with the hood sitting about 2 1/2" above the fender...using this method, the hood was fitting perfect in a few minutes!
