idk...factory or not, having the gtx off to the side instead of on top looks a LOT better :P

"Absolute correct spots"? I see a few other details about that parts this diagram I can't agree with. First, all of the GTX emblems appear disproportionately larger than they in fact are. The trunk mounted badge looks to me to be represented as larger than the circle bird. As for the fender locations, it would appear to be placed too far forward and too far up from the lower detail line. Almost all muscle Mopars had a badge of some kind placed there; I have never seen one that wasn't centered between the wheel well lip and the door gap. On the 72' Plymouth B-body it would have been centered between the detail line just aft of the wheel well and the door gap. 72' U-coded Air Grabber cars, without the call outs on the hood, had an additional "440" stick-on call out placed at this location as well. I don't see it represented in this diagram.

My past professional experience with these parts book diagrams show that they are, for the most part, anything but "accurate representations of where their emblems/stripes correctly go". Show me the engineering drawings for 72'.

As for the one "original paint" shot posted, anybody else notice the poor fit of that trunk lid? Could there have been repairs to that trunk lid or maybe have been swapped out at sometime? “Wear to the paint”, from a stick-on GTX badge? If it were to be placed above the circle bird, why then off-set to one side or the other? Aesthetically, why wouldn't it be placed centered directly above?

Of the 72' GTXs I've seen "in the flesh" over the years, I dare say more than a handful, can't say I have ever seen the badge located above and off-set to the left.

I believe most of these cars have been meticuliously restored, I'm guessing they didn't check that parts book diagram.

While I wouldn't claim to know what is correct for a 72 emblem placement. I prefer to look at original cars rather than restorations for what was factory correct.
While a very nice restoration, I can tell you I've seen the orange with white top car pictured, and it has some very obvious mistakes...incorrect exterior door handles come to mind.
Unfortunately, the black car I posted is the only original paint 72 U code runner I have photos of...

I have seen a few cars with this on them but I didn't think it was factory I see no evidence of this being on my car. It seemed more like deales or owners trying to do what they did in 71 by the marker light.

Hi Larry:

You are absolutely correct. The engine displacement decals that optionally went above the front fender marker lights were strictly a 1971 feature. There is no part number(s) or reference(s) to them in the 1972 Parts Catalog.

For 1971 RR's, the design of the decal to size it proportionately so that each numeral would be exactly above each of the three individual light lenses in the marker light assembly. Looks cool as can be!

I too have seen where some folks have added those decals to the 72's. Looks disproportionate above the smaller single lens marker lights. Just doesn't fit.

Thanks for chiming in!!

You have the 72 V code car right? Do you see any evidence of having had GTX emblems? Just curious whether they considered that one a GTX, or only the U code cars.....

hi collector annual 1992 72 raod runner gtx 63,000 on it show the gtx be side the road runner in 1983 i look at 72 rr gtx 440 4peed with the original paint on it and the GTX emblem was sitting beside the roadrunner decal. In 1985 I looked at a blue 72 roadruner GTX, rusty with the original paint on it and the emblem was the same way

This might sound kind of dumb, but I was wondering if different plants where the cars were assembled might of put the decals in different locations, just a thought 8)

My best guess is the placement might be more to who did it, on that very day yours rolled by, and what kind of a mood they were in!

Here's why I think that.

Mine had the GTX on the left side the round bird decal on the right! I am the only owner of the car and had never moved it. The purists say the GTX should be on the same side as the round bird decal. To which I say "Ma Mopar NEVER built a PURE car!"

So when I did the resto on my car the GTX went back where it started...on the left side!

That's my story, I'm sticking to it, I didn't do it and I won't do it again!

So do I!

So does my darling daughter who was one year old when I bought it...makes her "year one" when it comes to the car. She now lives just down the street from me so I know when I go to that big Mopar parts store in the sky, it will be in "good hands" and stay in the family!

During the restoration the very first time I fired it up and it moved under it's own power, after 16 years of idleness, she was in the car. So just like when I got it...she was the first passenger. Except this time she was sitting in the seat, not in her mother's arms!

Kind of brought a tear to both our eyes!

Wow! another original paint 72' RR/GTX recently unearthed over on moparts, couple of pictures posted show pretty clear evidence of the original locations for the circle bird and trunk mounted "GTX" badges. Pretty complete sunroof car as well.
