73/74 Steering columns

Post by Hotwheelsjr » Tue Dec 12, 2006 1:10 am

Okay...so I bought a floor shift column for my '73 SSP (originally a column shift auto). The new column came out of a console auto '74 RR. I tried installing it today and the firewall mount is/was different between the two!! The bolt holes were not even close to being the same and they are shaped differently too!! Are they different because of the year or because one car was originally a column shift and the other a console car? I took the column shift column apart and pulled the firewall mount off of it and had to do some modifying to get it on the console shift column, but I got it and it looks/works good. What gives? I though practically EVERYTHING was swappable between a '73 and '74...especially between the same model (Satellite/RR).

Interesting dilemma. My 73 Runner was a column shift originally. The previous owner installed a floor-shift column. I don't know what it's from but it fits fine though. The 73 SSP parts car I had also had a column in it from another vehicle...I don't even think it was from a 2-door car, it looked like it was from a 4-door. Even that fit fine. I dunno what's up with yours dude!

I'm not sure exactly what is different between power and non-power steering cars.....
