Nick, as we discussed, one of the tips on my car is original (and short). None of the current repops out there are close to original in the way the outer shell is attached to the inner, the shape of the inner, and the radius of the outer shell lip. What measurements do you need?AZ-Nick wrote:Is there anyone that has an original shorty tip, rusty and old will be ok, I need to take measurements off it?

Thanks for clearing up my memory....been awhile since I was under my cars!72RoadRunnerGTX wrote:There are two locations on both inner rear frame rails that are punched to accept a u-nut to mount the tip hanger or tail pipe hanger. With tips, the rearward location(with the extra hole) was used to support both the tailpipe and tip using the tip mounted tab. The other location (two hole) , about 10†or so forward IIRC, was used to anchor the turn down tail pipe hanger and was simply clamped to the pipe. This location will not except the oringinl style tip support, requires three holes.
The TTI 3†tail pipes on my RR/GTX are supported with what appear to be repo tip supports (does not need three holes however) mounted to the forward locations and tabs welded to the pipes. No need for the TTI repo tips to have the support tabs the originals have.

Re: Once and for all - The Tips debate may end here!!!!
Eric - It looks like I will be interducing my own selection of tips as I was telling you, I received the first set of samples and they look real good. I also have contacted the main or should I say the top company that makes manufactures them and they are willing to make them from my drawings so I will need to model them and then draw them up. I will carry all three, short, long and stubby versions and I will also have the 73-74 tips produced also. Because of this I will need to have a tip in hand so I can take the measurments and photograph the tip from all angles so I do not make any mistakes.Eric wrote:Nick, as we discussed, one of the tips on my car is original (and short). As far as the other items we had discussed, I found 3 company's that are willing to tackle the manufacturing of them, of course the problem is the Engineering costs involved. The old question is always the same, will there be enough demand to offset the engineering costs, I don't think so but I will let them work up the costs and I will then see.
I also found 3 company's that are willing to give me a cost on the GTX door panel emblems, once again the engineering costs may shut this idea down but I will see what they say.
It looks like I may be also going to start carring the tail light lenses and many other pieces for our cars.....
There is more but I wont bore you with it just yet.
So to anyone reading this, if you have a shorty tip or a Hemi tip that I could borrow so I could get measuments from, please contact me at nicksclassicparts@cox.net
thanks, Nick

Nick, I'll be needing a set of the short tips. I'll have to look to see if I can find the originals or if they got thrown away. Good luck.

I worked in the automotive plants for 30 years and one thing is for sure..If it came down to stopping the lines due to a parts shortage they will substitute incorrect parts to keep production going...If indeed Chargers and Runners went down the same lines they EASILY would have put whatever tips they had on a car to continue running...Correct or not..Factories would do things like this and figure the dealerships could exchange or fix this if necessary...If nobody complained , there you have it...right or wrong..

You are correct, and I suspect this is probably what happend to Nick's car. My grandpa told me that cars that were built in Detroit (especially Hamtramck built cars) were horrible quality. He said St. Louis cars were generally better. They often had to re-hang the doors, as well as correct other mistakes. The average customer at the time would not have known the difference between the long or short tips, as long as they were on the car. Nick is probably lucky they didn't put turn down tips on his car. At least they put the long tips on even though they technically weren't correct. Probably the same with the carb, however, with the carb the guy assembling the engine probably grabbed the wrong carb as opposed to deliberatly substituting.72V21V25 wrote:I worked in the automotive plants for 30 years and one thing is for sure..If it came down to stopping the lines due to a parts shortage they will substitute incorrect parts to keep production going...If indeed Chargers and Runners went down the same lines they EASILY would have put whatever tips they had on a car to continue running...Correct or not..Factories would do things like this and figure the dealerships could exchange or fix this if necessary...If nobody complained , there you have it...right or wrong..

Thanks for the response.... My X has a few out of the norm parts in it and sometimes I wonder if I am lucky or cursed with it.....72V21V25 wrote:I worked in the automotive plants for 30 years and one thing is for sure..If it came down to stopping the lines due to a parts shortage they will substitute incorrect parts to keep production going...If indeed Chargers and Runners went down the same lines they EASILY would have put whatever tips they had on a car to continue running...Correct or not..Factories would do things like this and figure the dealerships could exchange or fix this if necessary...If nobody complained , there you have it...right or wrong..

Ryan I'm suprised on how good of condition those tips look when you compare it to the bottom of the quarter in that pic. My car, the body was solid when I bought but the insides of the tips were mostly rotted away. Those tips looked better then mine did when I bought my car.

I suppose it might depend on how many miles are on the car. Mine had just under 60K. Trunk floor was solid, but lower quarters & extentions were bad. Ironically, the quarter in the pic was the good side.RS23 '71 wrote:Ryan I'm suprised on how good of condition those tips look when you compare it to the bottom of the quarter in that pic.
