I was wondering if maybe the alternator belt wasn't supposed to go around the fan and crank pulleys like the P/S belt, but the fan only has a single pulley.

Finally got some pics. Hope they help - note in the one shot (that shows the P/S) you can see how the fan pulley is right on top of the crank pulley and the alternator belt is basically 'trapped' there.

to me, it looks like at some time the alternator was replaced with a single pulley unit, and i thought that all motors with AC had a double pulley on the alternator. so that would explain why your belts are set-up differently. when i replaced mine, it just came with a double pulley. so, it appears as though you need to take the waterpump pulley and fan off to replace the alternator belt(that should take maybe 15 minutes i do believe). make sure when you go get your new belts you take them with you, or at least get the numbers off of them so that they will go back on how they came off, since they probably aren't the right belts for your car. and there isn't really another way to run them. i've run into that problem several times for belts and more recently the 2 day search for a power steering hose.

Youll just have to take off the other belts. No biggie.Id imagine,if you have to take off one belt you should replace the rest of them.

I see a two grove pulley on that alt. It’s pretty clear now that the motor is question is a small block that had A/C originally and had two belts driving the Alt and the missing A/C compressor off the two inner groves of the 3-grove crank pulley. Sometimes just backing off the bolts that secure the fan/pulley to the water pump flange will allow the pulley to rock out of the way sufficiently to get that belt out. You need to get that Power Steering pump belt off as well.

oh yup...guess i didn't see that it actually was a 2 groove pulley...i don't think it'll be a big deal to get em cahnged...try just loosening them up like he said...if not, you could take it off pretty easily and be set

To bad they dont make a dual fan pulley, this way you can go over the fan pulley to the crank and around to the alternator.removing the belt would be easy. 8)

just your belt would be longer.

Thanks guys, loosening the fan bolts and rocking the pulley out a bit worked like a charm. It was indeed a simple procedure, although the PS bracket bolts were really crapped up thanks to my leaky PS.
