Chances are they were left over '71 hoods used on the early '72 RRs. Which would explain why an early car article would have a '72 RR in it with the black on the hood. Just like early '72 RRs tend to have the '71 decklid with the cutout holes in the bracing for a rear wing which wasn't an option in 1972. Using up what they had in stock. More than likely they dropped the black on the airgrabber hood to save money.

Interestingly, I have an original paint AG hood sitting in the garage (from a 71) that seems to have the blackout painted first, then masked and painted body color.

No. Painted (color) hoods aren't inventoried, so there wouldn't be old inventory to exhaust.

That said, the black was painted first, then masked off so it is possible some old hoods with black were leftover, but I doubt it. Not sure at what point in the process the black paint was applied.

There is V21 thread going on Moparts. Covering all models.

These two documents were posted. I can't read the revision block on the drawing which is for the 71 model year, but updated for 72. Could delete or continue the paint behind the bubble. No telling if it was the last revision.

The 72 body manual make no reference to the organisol.

I'd really like a better look at that revision block.

I can't get the images to attach. Visit Moparts for a better view.

I have a copy of that paint document, and unfortunately the revisions do not address the V21 paint. They mainly reference removed and added mouldings for 72.

I guess what I'd really like to see then is the drawing that shows the 72 V21 stripes. That seems to be the missing piece of the puzzle.

The document that shows the V21/V25 stripes does not address the air grabber hood at all. Drawing appears more like a standard Satellite hood.

This may be the most telling document as to factory intent for the 72s. See boxed note "1971 only" pointing to the cowl blackout....

And thats definately painted on my 72, but like stated before I have a very early 72. So I guess I document that for the resto and redo it that way.

I have a '72, 400, lemon twist, air grabber, built after June 22 in St. Louis, non v21-25.
There's evidence of one repaint, different color, didn't do the engine compartment, yuck.
Scraping the hood paint shows just lemon twist under the repaint, and the cowl never had any blackout.
Wonder when they stopped the blackout, or was it plant specific?
Who's got the latest car with the blackout?
