Got it...just release pressure to go up through the next gear.1bluegtx wrote:No you dont have to push the shifter down to shift from 1st to second and to third. it ratchets forward just like the original slapstick. You only have to push it down to get it out of park into gear.and push it down to go from forward gears to reverse.

ur pry lookin at changin quite a bit of stuff...my car was a bench auto on the column car and someone took all of their performance pieces off a 71 charger and put em in my car...so you would pry have to change to buckets, then get a slapstik setup off ebay or a donor car, then get a console...for that u'd pry be lookin at a hundred or so for a console, a hundred for a slapstik, the 160 for the pistol grip, and what pry a few hundred for a set of buckets so pry 6-700 bux for that route
now if you wanted, you could get a 4-speed look shifter from jcwhitney or even a B&M or Hurst one...then switch ur knob to a pistol grip...but i doubt you could, but it's maybe possible to use a modified 4speed pistol grip shifter assembly and attaching it to an aftermarket floor-mount shifter mechanism...then you could keep your bench
that would be the 60-100 for a 4speed look shifter kit and then if you wanted the pistol grip, you'd have to pry get a repop and modify it...i think they go for a couple hundred (i could be wrong on that...)
or if you had no care of originality or appearing stock, you could throw in some sport seats and then use an aftermarket shifter, or put in a factory slapstik and console...so that'd be about 400 for new seats, making your own brackets most likely, then anywhere from 60 all the way up to 200 dollars for a shifter, or the 200+ for a factory set-up and then the pistol grip if you wanted it...
really depends what you want to do...i've considered all 3 and still don't know what i want to do yet
i'm a sucker for originality, but at the same time i like the sport seats and performance aftermarket parts...which i'm guessing is somewhere around where you are??? with a sundance, i kind of like how original they are...so i mean if the 400 is in good shape and needs no work go for it, if not, i'd rebuild, but beef-up your 318. then i'd do my best to steam clean the interior and only replace items like dash cap, carpet, headliner, and package tray...then all your weatherstriping and re-paint and get them stock decals on
the shifting is tricky tho...on the floor screams performance, but with it on the column and a bench, you can keep your girl close
plus a lot of performance cars came with a bench seat...the 1970 aluminum block 454 chevelle only came with a bench, the ol' roadrunners, a lot of the 71 gtxs had buckets with the fold down center and a column shifter....quite the quandry, but if i had your luck of getting a car almost unmolested (hood, but that looks cool) i'd keep it as original as possible, cuz ppl are gonna stop and stare either way
i guess i'm kinda rambling now....i'll stop

could you post a few more photos of your interior? I would love to see more of the Black/orange interior, haven't seen upper door panels like that before.
Looks good with the pistol grip too!

Yepp,
thats one cool interior you got there! I really like the orange door panels, dunno why but it just works really well.
My car is Curious Yellow and I changed the interior from white/black to all black. I would have loved an all blue, green or orange interior but none of them would really fit in a yellow car!
Well, if any of you guys saw the Tarantino movie Death Proof staring a very nice early 70'ies Mustang Grand Coupe - Yellow with a bright red interior, it could be done I guess.....might do that next time my interior needs a restore!
Anyway, cool colour combo you've got!

Yes these were my ideas brought to life over last winter. I thank you all for your kind words. It means more to me for you guys "in the know" than just some schmo on the corner. When I was 15 I bought my first 71 road runner in curious yellow. I always wanted to do a nicely groomed and stock like appearing interior. But when your that young the only money you can get your hands on goes into the gas tank so it never happened. Fast forward 25 years and this time I was damned to make it happen.
