Most of the inside of the box is covered in rust stains. It almost looks like someone used it for a bolt bin at some point in its life.
Try some CLR on that rust.

For my 2cents....
To the best of my knowledge the 71 I have now is original it appears somewhat aged if you know what I mean, and it is a milky semi-transparent white. My first 71 I bought back in 1979 was surely original and I'm certain it was the same milky semi-transparent white. However I too have seen black ones and I'm most certain that all the reops are being made off white.

I would be curious to know the build dates on the two cars

Well my RR was built May 71 and it has a white glove box liner.
