What do the trunk latch bolts look like on 71 Road Runner?

Post by Wizard » Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:41 am

Okay, anyone can tell me what type of marking is the correct bolts to use on the trunk latch that bolts on the underside of your deck lid where your key is used to open the trunk? It is held on with 2 bolts. I am doing a resto and not sure which are the correct bolts to use. If you have the length also that would be great.
On the top of the bolt head is there any markings for ex. L or a E on it or anthing else? My car is a 71 Road Runner.

Thanks,

Dave

Here ya go. The bolts have captive washers and are painted body color (the latch is plated). IIRC, the same bolts are used for the trunk latch and the strike.

My best guess...they painted the cars with trunk installed, but I assume they did the adjustments before paint. I'd imagine they installed the latch to work out the adjustments, then removed it for painting (putting the bolts back so as not to loose them). Again, this is my best guess at the assembly line procedure.
I should preface this by saying every survivor I've looked at (including my own St. Louis buit car) has been this way, however my early built LA car (not a survivor but fairly original) has black phosphate bolts. Different plant procedures? Possibly...most survivors I've looked at are St. Louis cars.

71 Road Runner trunk latch color?

Eric,

Thank you for the pics and measurement of the bolts and explanation on painting of bolts. I will look through my collection of bolts to find the correct ones as in the pics. My car was also made in St.Louis.

Thanks again.
