4 speed conversion

Post by fourforty6pac » Thu Apr 12, 2007 1:42 pm

Ok, I decided to put a 4 speed in my car even though it will most likely put a big strain on the budget. I havent found a tranny yet, but I am going to start getting together some of the parts. I have a question about the linkage. This will be going into a console equipped car. Will I use the same rods that are used in an e body with a console? Thanks!

Yep, the 4-speed console cars used the same set-up as e-bodies--the rear mount, short shifter and rods are all the same. The trans tunnel is being reproduced, so the trick will be finding a set of pedals. Consoles are different for automatics or 4-speeds, but I think that's something you could adapt...

P G CLASSICS sells the pedals for $190. I have a 4 speed console so that isnt a problem. The consoles are an easy fix if it is an auto console, it just needs to be cut and lightly sanded around the cuts. If you dont have a 4 sp console for a pattern, you can buy the template on ebay.
Everything needed can be bought reproduced or nos. I passed on a hemi 4sp last summer, the guy wanted 600 for it. I didnt buy it cuz I was going to stick with an auto. He sold it fast at that price.

Can the tail shaft from 71 to 74 b body be put on an eairlier 833? That would make the search easier, the eairlier 833's are mor plentiful and a bit cheaper.

tell the tail

Post by scottish440 » Sat Apr 14, 2007 12:11 am

it is easy to get the correct tail shaft...and possibly the correct transmission...

all of the late 70's and 80's dodge trucks have the 899 transmission and
the gold is the rear tail shaft has duel mounts....with the rear mount
being correct.....

for a bench seat car you can use the shifter, shifter bracket and the rear
mount....but the consoule car requires a shorter "shifter bracket"...
(the reverse rod from the trucks will not work)

some do not like the 899 over the 833....the gearing is a bit different
...otherwise it is the exact same transmission.

usually around 50 dollars at the pick-a-part...

. There are 2 tunnels, 71 74 b-body a short and a long. When you have the short tunnel, the shifter is bolted to the front of the tranny on a duel position, it is a 71- 74 b-body medium pistol grip for bench seat or buddy seat with buckets

when you have a long tunnel it's bolted to the back it is a71 -74 e or b -boby short pistol grip console or non console

Pick A Part Four speed

Post by scottish440 » Wed May 09, 2007 9:36 pm

O.K. 71440 gtx I do have a question for you.....I am building a
72 roadrunner 4 speed with the short hump bench seat..

I have a hurst shifter, linkage and mount bracket from a truck...they
look very similar to what you have shown in your picture.

the bracket is alittle different...but a fella at the nationals...said he has
a truck set-up in his 73.....with no problem.

what do you think? will it work

Can you trace the bracket and holes with mesurments...scan it and post it???

take care...and thanks for all you info...scott
