power steering pump??

Post by fourforty6pac » Wed Feb 21, 2007 5:44 pm

Sorry for the newbe question but my car came without the ps pump and I have no way of knowing what goes in there. What kind of ps pump goes in a 72 GTX? Is it a federal pump or a saginaw? The saginaw is the one that has the oval resivor. Thanks.

When you say "GTX" I assume you mean a 440 Roadrunner. As I understand the GTX was just a Roadrunner with a 440 (maybe 400) in 1972.

My parts manual says Power Steering Oil Pump w/key slotted pump shaft, except 318 part # 2891123

My power steering pump has the oval filler tube and the pulley is spoked and fastens with a nut and wodruff key on the shaft. It does not need a special puller to get it of, unlike those with a pressed on pulley.

You can get these at most good part stores, but then usually don't come with a pulley. I've found those at junk yards though. Just make sure you get one that fits the shaft on your pump.

As for the brakets...that's a whole different story. I don't know if a/c cars are different than non a/c cars as mine came with a/c.

Here's what the pump looks like.
