GTX Emblems Attachment Techniques
OK, got the hood done and the bird decals all in place. Now ready for the 3 GTX emblems.
Have the 3M adhesive for emblems.
Instructions say to put some on the emblem, push it against the body, then pull it off and wait 10-15 seconds, then reapply. On vertical surfaces (all of the GTX emblems are) use masking tape for a half hour to prevent sliding.
Any special things, techniques, or other information would be helpful.
Thanks

under pressure
the adhesive on the tape is pressure sensitive...so push!!!! those babies on....P.S. use some masking to get a straight line.

Re: under pressure
There is no adhesive or tape on the GTX emblems as they are the ones that came off the car originally and have been cleaned on the back.scottish440 wrote:the adhesive on the tape is pressure sensitive...so push!!!! those babies on....P.S. use some masking to get a straight line.

I took a piece of light cardboard and cut a notch in it that just matches the emblem profile. Then I put some masking tape on the fender break line and cut bottom of the cardboard so when it rests on the masking tape the emblem will be positioned the same distance above the break line as the "road" & "runner" emblems. Then I taped the cardboard to the fender. Now I have something that will hold the emblem so it doesn't slide down the fender until the glue sets.
One "problem" I've run into. When I put the glue on the back of the emblem, even a very small amount, it "squishes" out when I push the emblem against the metal. Then it is really hard to take the emblem off without spreading it all over the area where the emblem will go.landon1 wrote:i'd say that about covers putting on emblems...that's exactly what i did, but i waited longer than 30 min just to be safe, cuz i would've really hated to do it again
I'm trying to figure out a way to prevent or reduce this squishing. I'm kind of leaning toward doing it on a separate piece of metal, then once the glue is evenly distributed, pulling it off and reapplying it to the car fender. That way all the excess will not be present on the car itself.
The other option is I have some double sticky tape that is used on airplanes to hold carpet down. It is really strong and I'm considering using it. That way I don't have to worry about any of the 3M glue, which is pretty thin (as compared to something like RTV), from running down the fender during the setting process.
The other issue I really don't know about, which might make this all moot, is what effect the 3M glue will have on the paint. I have a base/clear paint on the car and am wondering if it will be possible to just clean any excess off using lacquer thinner or perhaps even Prep Sol? I have found acetone will dissolve the glue but not too sure what that will do to the clear coat paint.
Probably making way too much out of all this, but it's my first shot at using this type of glue to attach emblems.

Stick Situation
O.K I see....you have original emblems.....I have the aftermarket emblems...with the 3M double sided black tape..
I have re-applied alot of emblems....really if you get a length of the black 3m apply it to the emblem abd trim it so it will not be seen....I think this will be your best move.....you are correct the glue you use may be "hot" and bother the paint....but I have never had the auto grade double stick ever hurt paint....or ever come off.....IMHO
hope this helps....scott

DANG! Just after I figured a way to make the 3M glue work all you guys come up with the tape thingee! Gahhh....I LOVE IT!
Actually I came to the conclusion about the black sticky tape thing, but ALAS after I had already glued the two fender emblems on. I took some pix of what I did and will post them.
The black sticky stuff (airplane grade) works good at least on my "test panel". I have to extra GTX emblems so I'm kind of "testing" different things.
Only PIA (aka pain in the ass) thing with the black tape is after it's applied to the emblem is trimming it so once installed the paint will show through the openings in the emblem.
Back side? Front side? trim? I used an exacto knife (small one) and did it from the back side which seemed to work best. Still after application there still was some residue in the really small crevices of the emblem.
No biggie from my standpoint but from the purist...different story.
Me? I want it to cruise the Sonic and pick up chicks...unless of course the Missus is with me! Woo Hoo!
